How many feet in a mile: is this common knowledge

Pointless thread, but I was just curious as to how many people know how many feet are in a mile and if you think this is common knowledge. A co-worker asked this question and upon several people immediately knowing it was 5,280 feet she questioned how we all knew this and strongly disagreed with our assessment that it's common knowledge and more people than not would know this. She's a very smart person as well which is why we were teasing her a little more about it.

I know a 1/4 is 1320 feet but only because I'm into drag racing. Multiply that by 4 and you have your mile.

See, you had all that useless info stored in your head, and it destroyed your memory. Us younger folks just google everything whenever we need it, which equal less brain power being used.

That's how it works, right?

I think it should be common knowledge but there are lot of things that I feel that way about that lots of people don't know.

The only reason I remember is because of the movie remember the titans.

Yes, it is common knowldge for males who grew up before the iPod.

But it doesn't have anything to do with shoes, so girls don't rememeber it.

Unless they have to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Then they might remember.

lol thanks for the input guys. She argued she was an English and journalism major in college therefore shouldn't have to remember these things. I just thought it was one of those things you learn and just don't forget.

What's the statistic? Something like 30% of Americans can't pick out the USA in a world map? And you expect 1 mi = 5280 ft to be common knowledge?
