Mostly true... until you find your 1.5 year old saying "spider bite me", laughing it off, then realizing out of the corner of your eye a black spot on the door right by him.

Lucky the spider did not bite him, it was a black widow about 4 inches from his face eye level, crawling on the door. We have a ton of them around our house, and we know where to look for them and would have not thought they would be where they were that time or a few other instances.

For the most part you are correct, but they will shock you when least expect it.

Everyone claims to have seen, been bitten, or knows someone who almost lost a limb from a Recluse bite....

But the Brown Recluse is NOT found in California.

Their are several different species and some do spin webs...to catch prey. The ones out here in the desert do just that....I'm sure Cali is no different

    ?????

In the picture, it's abdomen is toward the top of the screen.
That's not it's head. Spider's heads are contained within the body... they only have two body segments, insects have 3.

It ain't shit to worry about, as mentioned above, it's prolly some type of wolf spider (there are many, over 2,000). It's not a recluse, or a widow. Also your exterminator is going to joe-bob you, cause its all but impossible to spray for spiders and have any decent results. Only reason he was there is the presence of other bugs (food).

    http://pestcontrol.about.com/od/diyspidercontrol/a/Effective-Control-Of-Indoor-Spiders.htm

Here's a link stating why spraying is very ineffective on spiders.

Woof spiders are not web builders they are hunters. They have multi feasted eyes very obvious and are fun to play with they will defend them self’s use a small stick or pencil point and they will attack it. They pretty much are harmless to people.

    That link didn't help....
It's a little disjointed and not clear, but pretty much says that the BR isn't in CA, but a relative that avoids humans lives in the high desert (not Hermosa Beach)
    Likewise:
Then there are these whom say there arent any...
    Likewise... saying the same thing.

    LOL!!

    this^

we have those fucking things all over my yard if you lift up a drain for the gutters there are huge ones hiding underneath it! i have never seen them in the house though that can't be good.

from my understanding an exterminator probably won't do much good as spiders have to be directly sprayed or treated or their food source must be treated.

i love florida but, i don't think i could ever live there due to the bugs lol
