I think they handled things well considering and are very fortunate to be alive and for the most part able to walk out or call for help.

A man's apparent attempt to avoid immigration left him with several broken bones when he jumped out of a passenger plane the moment it landed in Bali.
According to the Jakarta Globe, Iranian national Foroughin Monteza Baratali was on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Denpasar via Singapore on Sunday.
"As soon as it landed, the man abruptly opened the cabin door and jumped out onto the tarmac," the newspaper says.
It's not clear whether the plane was still moving at the time.
A medical report submitted for the police said the man suffered "broken bones in different parts of his body".
He was taken to the International Medical Center in Kuta and remains there under police guard.
The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office says Baratali's name is on a travel ban list and it's likely he was trying to avoid passing through immigration screening.
"We're still investigating what crime he committed to be put in the travel ban list," Wayan Sudana, the head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, told the Globe.
"He will be deported after being treated."

Nice of the pilot to warn everyone to brace for impact. You could tell it was losing altitude just as they went over the trees. This is just one more example of why I prefer the ground. Your life is COMPLETELY in the hands of someone else when you fly in a plane. I'll pass. Don't get me wrong, I love flying, as long as I'm in control and I'm holding onto a set of dirtbike handle bars. Man wasn't meant to fly, birds are.

 

Either that and/or improper flaps. Engine and prop seemed to be working okay. Contrary to original description, temperatures and air pockets had nothing to do with this. Planes easily fly in such temperatures and an air pocket didn't prevent it from climbing over all that distance. Anyway, the pilot should have reacted quicker, setting it down just as soon as he noticed something was wrong (wasn't climbing). He certainly have plenty of open field to do so before reaching the trees. Regardless, always good to see everyone made it out okay. Plane is a total loss (parts).

 

The proper term is downdraft. You are surrounded by air pockets, unless you live in a vaccum.
Small airplanes, and unprepared pilots are most vulnerable to downdrafts, especially if you are close to or over your weight limits.

As stated ("contrary to original description,"), I was using the words found in the original description. In the context of air flight, clear air turbulence (downdrafts, wind shear, etc) is often colloquially referred to as "air pockets." Regardless, this airplane was not impacted by air pockets, downdrafts, or whatever. It never gained sufficient altitude (unknown cause), with the pilot constantly fighting to keep it from losing what little altitude it had. He simply lost that fight.
