easy stuff for you to do yourself. take apart your laptop. the harddrive will be screwed in remove screws unplug the two plugs in the back of the drive. Take your old drive to fry's or any store with computer parts. tell them you need to replace the drive and they will show you the kind you need. go home screw in the drive and plug back in the two plugs in the drive and put the laptop back together. Find a download of your operating system.burn it to disk and reinstall it on your new drive. Make sure you get the right os so your code from the windows sticker works. Be brave thats how I learned. goodluck

OP, you need someone like Lucy to fix this thing.
    He's all over it.
Could be just a corrupted Boot Sector/MBR which is repairable.
Exposing the drive to diagnostic software can determine drive fitness.
Before going too far with repairs I would try slaving it to another 'puter and recover any valuable data that I could.

    She's gone but not forgotten.
It's in a laptop, there won't be two cables to unplug, just a plastic pin header. Even easier.

If you do remove it yourself and you have carpeting on the floor where you do it, keep track of those screws. They're a bear to find in carpeting!

Hey everyone, let's step back for a second:

    1. I wouldn't be so sure the hard drive is fried. Since he has a SATA connection, it's very possible that the XP disc does not recognize his SATA controller, which is very common.

      Now for the OP:
    2. Let's go with the cheapest, easiest test we can. Grab a copy of Ubuntu and try installing. It has better support for hard drive controllers, even booting/installing from a USB device. Since it is open source, you can try it without incurring cost. If it works, you don't have to keep it installed. It just lets you know that your hardware is good, or your hardware is bad.
    3. Hard drives usually have a warranty of 5 years. Turn off the laptop, pop the cover off the hard drive section. You should see the hard drive label. Let's say it's a Hitachi drive. We would go to Hitachi's site and walk through the steps. If they determine the drive is busted, you can do a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) and they will get you a brand new drive. Removing a hard drive isn't too scary - unscrew a few screws, disconnect the drive, and you are done. The big thing is to make sure you don't bend pins. As long as you go slow and don't force stuff, it's a pretty painless process.
    4. Re-activating your laptop is easy provided you have an original sticker on your laptop and a copy of the Microsoft Windows version the sticker pertains to. When you install and it gets to the point where you need to re-authorize, it may notify you that you have to call for authentication. When they answer, they basically ask if it is legit software (yes) how many machines you are installing it on (one), and why you re-installed (my computer had problems). Note that you can usually re-install Windows 5 times over to the same machine before you need to call for re-activation.

I should also say that if you don't want to play with Ubuntu, you could try getting a copy of Windows 7 beta, which is free to download now as well.
