Not for me. With family born, raised and still living in Germany I've spent more than a year in the EU much of it in Switzerland. It's a great place really but, certain restrictions (guns etc) would keep me from wanting to call it home.

    Anyone not from America. :canada:

A great deal of you feel it is imperative to be armed because you have to be protected from something. How could you break the top 10 with a culture of of people fearful for their protection?

I don't say this to stir shit, but think about it. If your population is too scared to walk their streets, or sit in their homes unarmed, how could your country be one of the best places to be born in?

I have never felt the need to be armed walking or driving down the street, or while sitting in my home.

For me it's not so much the actual having it on me as it is having the ability to have it on me. Additionally, you've made summations that sure do not apply to all of us. I'm not afraid to walk down the streets in my area or sit in my home. We're not allowed to discuss certain issues but, would be more then willing to do so if allowed and would start by detailing the abuses put on populations all through history. We at least have the ability to defend ourselves in such an event.

You're right... not everyone is scared to walk your streets... it was a broad brush example. But the 10 best places etc, and other lists are not concerned with history. I'm Germany wouldn't have made the list in the 1940's.

So let me rephrase... you feel you have the need to defend yourself.

Correction Frank, I feel the need to have the right to defend myself if I choose to do so. Additionally, I am a firm believer in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights...enough so to support it.

Did you read how the results were tabulated? 11 factors were included...I included gun ownership rights as one of my reasons for not wanting to call a place like Switzerland home.

Switzerland has a large number of gun ownership.

I believe everyone born and raised in a free country should have and participate in some type of patriotic activity. But a well educated citizen should understand the faults of their own country, and through the voting process, self-improvement, and in educating the youth of their respective countries, work to make their country better.

    Sounds reasonable, right?

But when ever a poll is released by whatever group, the US never does as well as US citizens think it should have. The placing is always a surprise, and the question is always why?

Being a Canadian, I tried to give the most respectable answer I could without ruffing too many feathers.

I'm not shocked or surprised by the survey results and further, I don't care about them. What I said was "not for me". I've spent years in other countries (EU and far east) and I'd still rather live in the US. I have family that were born, raised and still live in other countries. I'm not a person who has never left my town, county, state or country. I'm speaking from my own perspective. It seems you are somewhat anti gun and it also seems you've somewhat directed your comments towards my reasoning. It turns out to answer a question I didn't ask.

Further, and I agree that education is a key, I wonder how many of the high ranking countries would be rated as high as they are if it weren't for those armed and apparently less well educated citizens of the US? Seems Germany wanted to disarm its population and pretty much ran amuck in the past.

Further, I can name several countries with stringent gun control that do not rank high on the list. I wonder what thier problem is if that's the root of our problem?

...don't care about these studies, ...don't care about the criteria... why give up what you have?... i am a free man, ...a citizen, not a subject... and that means more to me than the rankings... ;)

x2, also the internet isn't a good representation of America by the way... I'm not scared to walk around without a gun. I don't think I know anybody that way. It's more because of what Joe said IMO

yes, i know, ...i don't have a problem w/ that, ...i'm sure there is a number of criteria where other countries are "better" than the US, depending on the "scoring"... i was just saying, despite the rankings, i still wouldn't trade places ;)
