    Engineering Math Question

    Conditions:

A track hoe weighing 22 tons is on top of a lowboy trailer and heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas.

The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, re-enforced with 1?? inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a diamond pattern layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.

    Solve:

When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you have to be going to slice the bridge in half?

(Assume no effect for headwind and no braking by the driver...)

    Extra Credit:

Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above.

    Yes, you can neglect friction.

I couldn't solve it either......but who cares! The driver was on his cell phone.................. The cost of this mishap will be more than the phone call!

There is no way to tell. I think most folks aren't as alert as they should be when they are talking on the cell. But that doesn't matter, the fact that he was on the cell is what everyone is going to say caused the accident.

Jeeez, well yeah the cell phone doesn't help but I doubt that he would be able to look in the mirror and know exactly if he will clear it... although it may have concerned him and he'd stop and crawl under it... and then notice that he won't fit.

Did this disrupt train service from Chicago leaving on track 7 at 630pm which in turn was supposed to meet up with a train leaving New York on track 12 leaving at 930pm traveling at 62 mph?
