Starter Tool Set

So I'm looking to buy a starter tool set to wrench on the truck. My budget is about $200. Anyone have some good recommendations? I want to get most bang for my buck. I'm thinking of pinking up a craftsman set, but they have like 100000 different ones within my budget.

Seems to have a good range of socket sizes. Another thing, why is it that some small sets cost 3xs as much?

 

Hey denny try home depot i got a set bigger than the craftsman and with husky you still get a life time warranty plus it cost me $60 dollars around black friday time.

I'm looking for a set that has a wide rage of sockets. I'm always in need of a bigger socket then the standard tool sets include. I actually had a 204 piece craftsman that I returned. 50% of the 204 pieces are screwdriver bits, allen wrenches, i already have all that stuff. They make it sound nice: "204 Piece Tool Set". But in reality, only half the tools in the set are valuable.

Steve, I was just looking at home depots website, they have some nice husky tool sets for sure!

Right now its between these two: Which one do you guys think is better quality? Any other sets that I should be looking for that offer about the same amount of sockets?

well..just compare the two, and which ever has the most sockets, go with it.

I started out with a 280 piece set, and it has probably doubled in size since i started wrenching for a living. Just get the basics, and buy as you need.

also, check out ebay. Ive got a ton of specialty stuff from there, in awesome condition.

 

Hey denny you need to check out sears this week awesome deals on craftsman tools a 260 piece for $199 damn good price man and a 348 piece for for $274. Makes me wanna go get tools. And another kit 192 piece for $149

 

I know I always end up wrenching on my inlaws' domestics so it's always good to have SAE on hand. Especially on the vehicles that seem to randomly switch between SAE and metric. Or you don't have the right size SAE, but can get by with a slightly larger metric. Or vice versa.

Craftsman are $$$EXPENSIVE$$$. I buy at HD and Lowes now - you can get a lot more tool for the money there.

 

I prefer the Kobalt stuff at Lowe's. I do have a nice Husky set though.

I've been kind of disappointed with Craftsman lately. My dad and I both have had problems with stuff breaking, and as far as the "Lifetime" guarantee is concerned, it's only if you have a receipt.

 

Yeah, we got my Dad a craftsman power washer as a gift last year. The first time he went to use it, the place where the hose attaches broke off. He took it back, and they wouldn't replace it without a receipt. Wouldn't even offer to fix it. Dad isn't rough on his tools either. Maybe it's just the local Sears being a bunch of asshats too.

 

For a starter set the Craftsman will work fine. That is what I bought for my very first set. I still have most of that set! That was in the 80's.. Ratchets still work fine and they've been well used. Mine came with a toolbox (metal). You can never have enough tools..
