    Mechanical failure of this nature used to be a characteristic of the IBM-then-Hitachi Deskstar drives, earning the nickname Deathstar.

    I own two WD drives, a 500GB Caviar from 2006, and a 1TB Caviar Black from 2009. Both running fine today.

    I still have some old IDE WD drives that run fine. I've only ever had one WD drive die on me, and it was probably my fault. WD replaced it with a drive twice the capacity for free.
