NFL players may be fined for wearing unauthorized 9/11 tribute gear


If you remember that the NFL threatened to fine Peyton Manning(notes) for wearing high-top cleats to honor the late Johnny Unitas after Unitas passed away on Sept. 11, 2002, you know that the league takes its uniform rules very, very seriously. Manning was threatened with a $25,000 fine if he wore the cleats in a game because he had formally been denied permission to do so by the NFL. In the end, Manning took a pass, though Baltimore Ravens quarterback Chris Redman(notes) flew in the face of authority and got popped with a $5,000 fine for his trouble.

It was a callous move by the NFL, but if what we're hearing about what players want to wear to honor the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is true, you haven't seen anything yet. According to the tweets of Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, the penalties for players wearing specific 9/11 tribute gear could be fairly steep.

Briggs: Reebok great job on these gloves and shoes..looks like I'm getting fined this week. Lol! By far the best fine I will ever have to pay. Thanks…Fines for gloves could be as much as 5k..the shoes 8-10k I think. not 100% on the shoe fine.

I'm WTF'ing the NFL banning them. It's a one time deal to honor the people who died on that cluster fuck of a day. Hideous: yeah...pretty ugly....flag etiquette: needs to be followed at all times.....The meaning behind wearing that gear and what it stands for: Mutha Fuckin priceless.

 

The NFL doesn't care what it stands for, its all about the money.

 

I think it'd be more classy for them to wear a 9/11 patch, or a Red White and Blue ribbon screen print on ALL NFL uniforms.

according to the flag etiquette i agree the gloves and shoes should not be allowed unless following the rules.

it would be different if they had flags on them rather than being made to look like they were made from pieces of the flag

So, while the NFL could have jumped on this story with a bit more urgency to insure that players wouldn't assume a fine, we send kudos for not sticking to the league uniform code in a situation where an exception clearly had to be made.
The NFL is already planning a series of 9/11 remembrances, and the league and NFLPA are combining to donate $1 million to various charities and memorials. To let a simple uniform issue get in the way of issues infinitely more important would have been a real shame.
