I hear you on wanting to do the right thing. Contacting the company that sent it is probably your best bet. Hopefully they have contact info for the intended recipient and will contact UPS and have it picked up and resent. I hope that's what I would do, but I am not sure. I would be real tempted to just tell UPS to come get their customer's property off my steps or it will be thrown away. Not sure on any legalities here, if it was USPS, I'm not sure I'd tell anyone I was throwing it away......but not sure if UPS is different rules.

really? usps for sure. but fedex, no. were faster in EVERY shipping lane except for 1 nationwide. and we have saturday delivery. not to mention the total volume handled by fedex compared to ups. ups being better is a joke. maybe where you live your delivery guy is slow or something..

The USPS has always picked up mail that wasn't mine, so I have no beef with them. But like you, I think UPS does have some skin in this game and has a duty to get it to the right person, or return it to the sender as undeliverable for the sender to sort out

Just give that number a call and they should get it fixed up. I deal with this all the time.

^You think UPS might not want to do anything unless the sender pays them to get the package back?

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
OP, you are correct in thinking UPS should pick up and figure out real address, or return to shipper. Too bad they only have computerized forms or automated phone system, makes communicating with them frustrating. They will pick up if you call and let them know. You can chat live on their website with a cust serv rep, they should be able to help.
The other alternative is to just leave it on the porch until original receiver or shipper figures it out, and UPS will come looking.

Just give it to any UPS driver and tell them it was dropped off at your house and its not yours. Or a UPS store or drop it in a UPS letterbox and put RTs on it. I am a UPS driver and I see this all the time. Make sure to put RTS on it or it will show back up on your steps again.

A driver can take it, but a UPS Store cannot due to liability issues regarding "the chain of custody" of the package.

Its equivalent to a taxi service.

They drive up and drop off some drunk person you dont know, at your residence. the person wanted to come to your residence.

They pay the cabby, and he leaves.

You then try to call the cabby back, and ask him take this penny-less, drunk stranger back to wherever he came...

    Doesnt work.

Dont hate the cabbie/courier, hate the idiot/sender...

Contact the company, tell them they've fucked up, and they'll rectify it.

Never heard of that. The UPS stores here will take about anything ( not that it's the right thing to do).

That is a logical analogy, but no, I dont think its equivalent. I still think UPS has a duty to return it to the sender when they cannot deliver it to the intended recipient, or when they learn (as such through my email) that they left it on the doorstep of the wrong recipient.

But regardless, I think I will take the advice given and give it to a UPS store or a UPS driver.

Your sure its a UPS package? It may sound like a stupid question but you wouldn't believe the amount of packages people try to give me that say USPS on them.

Call the number I gave you or find a driver. It's The UPS Store policy not to take refused packages.
