Took my female dog to er at midnight this morning. 4 hours of constant puking. She did not want to eat or drink. And was constantly drooling. Once she started puking blood we knew it was time for vet. We are up to $1000so far with tests and meds.

Where do you draw the line?

We broke down and got pet insurance so it doesn't come down to that. My dog tore is ACL when he was 6 months old (he's a lab) and the cheapest surgery option was 2,500, without it, he couldn't go faster than a brisk walk. The insurance covered the majority of it so it's almost paid for itself for his entire life with just that incident. There were more expensive options, upwards of $4,000 and the insurance gave us the ability to evaluate all the procedures without really taking the cost into consideration. We ended up choosing the cheaper procedure because it was done locally and not at a specialist but it was nice to not be forced into making the dog suffer because we couldn't afford the surgery or going into debt trying to pay for the cheapest surgery option because it was the only one we could afford.

When it comes to more serious issues, I draw the line at not keeping the pet alive just because I'd feel bad putting them down. If they are suffering, the humane thing to do is have them put to sleep in my opinion.

I got pet insurance and I agree if the poor animal is suffering put him/her down. I had a dog that got cancer and he was suffering and at the time I couldn't afford the procedure to put him down so I just took him out hunting for the last time it was quick painless and he didn't see it coming total cost .15, I felt like complete shit after that cuz I took him to get cremated and for all you out there that think what I did was cruel tell that to the suffering animal and I used a .22 so it wasn't gross it was like he just went to sleep, I still get teary eyed thinking about him I am just glad he died doing what me and him loved to do.

Well I know the line for my family is above 4500 because that's how much it cost to get our lab's ACL fixed up.

I would ask my vet what it could be and if there is a medication you could try first before bloodwork and test. Then if it doesnt get better fast ask there opinion of wheather or not they think its worth the money to do the test. I would hate to pay all that money just to find out that it was something terminal and they need to be put down anyway. I hope it gets better and not much more suffering and expense.

my bull terrier about 2-3 months ago got bit by a brown recluse (is what i told her vet i thought it was and she agreed) because we have alot of them here, on her face and her face is slowly deteriating (spell check), so every month i have to go buy new medicine and refills for her, its not getting any better its just slowly getting worse and she wants to scratch it constantly which is NOT good and i cant put a cone on it because its half her face/neck. shes not 'suffering' though, shes just as happy as can be she plays still and has full of energy it just looks horrible, but as long as shes happy and still kicking ( shes 11, so shes getting up there) ill keep dishing out the money. have had all my dogs (3) since born and theres nothing i wouldnt do for them

Is your pet insurance vet-billable or is it out of pocket up front then reimbursed later by insurance co? The insurances I've seen so far have all been reimburse type so I'd still have to have the coin up front for a major procedure.

To the OP's original question- With basic maintenance plus ongoing treatments for a back injury suffered last summer, my dog runs me $350/mo on average. I don't know where exactly I'd draw the line on a major incident, but it would probably depend on how much 'free' money I had at the time. I would spend as much as it took, so long as I had it and there was a good chance it would make a difference to him.

we have a pup he was 4 months old at the time had him since 4.5 weeks old. toxins were attacking his kidneys. over night a few nights bags of fluids, IV. Got him stable done some bloodwork. he was diagnosed with addisons disease. vet bill total was around 700 or so. doc said he will live a normal dog life if he gets his shot once a month which when he is fully grown might be about $80-$100 a month. Also he has to take a small dosage of prednisone daily. 3 month supply about 60 bucks. he's now 7.5 months doing great. just slowly gainging weight back. seen one of his litter mates and he's outgrown ours when ours was bigger up until he got sick. say he lives 15 years thats $18000 just for shots over 15 year period.

Wouldn't set a limit. My dogs are a part of my family.. the only way they would be put down is if it would be the better option. I.e. pain and suffering.

Money's not object it's weather or not the pet is a family member or not and when it comes to pain and suffering do the right thing and don't prolong. The best is when the pet makes up the decision and just goes the way they want to go.

Still out of pocket for the ones I know of. Pet insurance isn't like people insurance where the health care providers have worked out deals with the insurance companies and have agreements. That's why some providers don't except certain insurance companies because they can't come up with agreements. Pet insurance will reimburse you regardless of vet as long as the medical procedure is within your contract.
