Motorcycle.
I don't know how old your kid is, but if he/she is out of the car seat then you're good to go.

In that price range, I'd stay away from anything domestic. Domestic cars are made to be thrown away, they aren't made to last forever like a Toyota or Honda IMO

They do I think, but a guy I knew just got rid of his '01, it had like 120K or 130K, it was burning a quart a week (He had a long commute). And when he went and bitched at the dealer he bought it from he met another guy with the same car and same problem.

The only non-Japanese commuter I would buy is a geo metro. Those engines are pretty stout.

Civic or corolla seem to take the cake. While they are less than problem free an old TDI Jetta might be fun.

Thanks for the replies, looks like a Corolla or Civic then. Are there any specific years I should be looking for, or looking out for? I'm not one to care about a DD that can go fast, just reliable and good MPGs... all I care about haha

LOLWUT?

The Chevy Prizm is a Corolla. Built on the same production line in Fremont.

No Tercel? Perhaps it's replacement, the Paseo? Might be hard to find, only made for a few years before being replaced by the Echo in 2000.
MIGHT be able to get a 2000 or maybe 2001 Echo 2-door manual trans for $4k... Awesome little car, with a higher seating position that won't leave a person used to pickups feeling like they are sitting on the ground.

I can't stand driving a Civic, and I'm not even comfortable in a Camry.

Still kinda Japanese.
The Metro is the Suzuki Swift (false advertising)... but they were made in the joint GM/Suzuki "CAMI" factory in Canada.
