Definitely Leathermans. Gerbers just feel like junk.

for expensive leathermans hands down its the charge tti, i carry it on my belt everyday at work, and it comes in handy for everything. S30v steel is phenomenal. for cheap leathermans I have always been a fan of the wingman, its a great purchase for around 30 dollars, and the full size spring loader pliers are amazing. I am a big knife guy, have everything from the buck vantage pro folding knife, spyderco knives to the benchmade nimcub II fixed blade, or a sog seal pup elite. Never been a fan of gerber, for knives or multi tools, the only gerber I like is the military LMF II, that thing is a tank

Have you heard of the BMF? Bigger version of the LMF. I think they discontinued the BMF a while ago though.

I would buy a multitool if it were made here in the USA, or in another country like Germany. I have a few Victorinox if they count.

    ok, i'm preparing for :crapstorm:

i owned a leatherman supertool (the original from back in the 90's) for almost 10 years until it got stolen
that tool was superb, and i loved it; i would buy that particular one again in a heartbeat

when i went to buy another, i went with leatherman again, and got a wave
i was incredibly disappointed with it: there was heavy machine marks all over it, a lot of the tools did not open well (and/or conveniently); which, was mainly to blame because of poor design IMO, like the adjacent tool pretty much covering the thumbnail notch to open it (maybe i got a lemon?), and when you open one, all the rest come out with it - some may consider that a pro: i personally don't like it

    so...
i did a lot more research, and i ended up buying a Victorinox Swisstool
i've owned Victorinox knives all my life, and was familiar with them - just didn't know they made a multitool like this; so, was confident to buy one when i found out they existed
i could not be more happy now - it exceeded my expectations
first: all the tools open individually and each have their own leaf spring - i prefer this; some may not
second: the design is brilliant; already mentioned the above; and: unlike most leathermans, you can open ALL the tools without opening it into the plier stance - also, when you only open up one side (half-way) to go into plier mode, it has a stop that essentially turns the tool into a perfect 90 degree angle that can be used as a small square (i'm not describing this well - sorry if that made no sense)
third: all the steel is mirror polish finish - no machine marks whatsoever (you can get black oxide, if you don't like the mirrored steel)

the only things that i prefered about the Leathermans is that their pliers are more of a hybrid between square and needle nose - the Victorinox is very blunt/square, and i miss having more of a needle nose at times
also, the Victorinox steel is a little softer, which means it doesn't hold an edge quite as well; BUT, it also means that it doesn't chip or break like i've had leatherman tools do; they more so get marred/bent, and you can usually file them back to operable

I didn't know Victorinox made a multitool. Is it made in Switzerland? If so I would take one of those of these two choices any day.

    Agreed here!
And I personally carry a small Gerber. Simple and easy to use.

    Leatherman,

I have owned both, the quality of the steel that Leatherman uses Vs gerber is hands down better.... mine has been on my belt ever day for years. Havent sharpened it yet.
my gerber multi tool sits at the bottem of my foot locker in a pile of extra stuff i never use.
I carry a multi tool becuase i use it every day, from when I am working shifts on the ambulance, to working field shifts ( eight days on six days off backpacking in the dessert) i need one tool that does it all.
they have my vote, hands down

Still rocking a Leatherman PST, the original, and I absolutely love it. OP you have anyway to get a hold of any leftover PSTs? I don't understand why they stopped selling them :frusty:

I just bought a Leatherman (I think the Wave) as a groomsmen gift and was impressed by it, seems very well made.

Personally, I have a cheap Kobalt multi-tool that I keep in my truck. It doesn't have all the fancy gizmos that the Leatherman has, doesn't have the warranty, but at 1/10th the price of the Leatherman I just bought, I've got no complaints with it.
