Ok, so I thought I'd change the oil in the wife's Caravan this morning. No biggie. Done many times before. So as the oil is draining, I get out the 5 quart jug of Pennzoil I got from Walmart a couple of weeks ago & start to open it up. I remove the cap & I see there is a foil cover that is over the hole. Just like normal. As I remove the foil, I notice the glue holding it on is really sticky, Weird, never saw that before? Now as I remove it, I see that it is very black in color underneath. Very weird. As I look inside, I see the oil is totally black! WTF?? Now I know new oil does NOT look like that! Apparently, some jerk weed emptied out the new oil & put in his used oil, and made it look like it was never opened up with foil & glue, then returned it to Walmart! Damnit, really people?? Come on! Went back & got a new jug with no problems but this is ridiculous! Word of caution to you guys, check everything you buy really good.
This ever happen to any of you guys??

I just have to say one thing to this jackass.........KARMA, FUCKER!

Sorry for the rant but this makes my blood boil!

    That is messed up......

Did you contact Walmart about it? Take the bottle in and show them.....

At this point, they (Walmart) should not be accepting oil returns OR checking the bottles when they are returned. They could go even further and require a name & signature when someone returns the bottle.

Oh yea, I took it back & got another one. She said that's never happened before. I told her she might want to have her employees check the returned mechandise really good before putting it back on the shelf. In my case it did have some foil on the top, so it was tough to spot. In the future, I'll be checking the tops to be sure they are intact. What scares me is this is how people get sick or injured from say someone tampering with medication. Remember the Tylenol madness long ago?? Just a few years ago my wife bought cough syrup only to find out after opening up the box, someone had removed the cough syrup & filled it with water, then sealed the box back up. I'm just saying you really have to check everything out now when you buy stuff. Ridiculous.

They should absolutely be checking the bottles when they're returned but in the case of the OP, how would you know? If someone took care not to break the plastic thing on the lid and glued the foil down nicely, how would anyone know it was bad oil? Hell, I'd guess a lot of people would have put the spent oil in their vehicle and not even known what they did.

I've seen this come up more frequently and have made a habit of at least visually inspecting my oil when I buy it but all I check is that the cap is on and the seal has not been broken.

You should at least let Walmart know of the situation, that way they'll pay better attention next time some random dude walks in returning oil.

That sucks dude, but you got your money back. I also have never seen the gray cover over the opening on quarts or 5 qt jugs either.

It's tough to tell from that with the cap on and the foil in place. Once you open the cap, then you can see the carmel color but with the cap on, it all looks a little dark. I tested that once when I put my spent oil back into a Mobil 1 jug, I held that one up next to a fresh jug. With the cap on, it's tough to tell, with the cap off, you could definitely tell.

Yup! Actually, the black cap did have a tamper proof ring & I noticed it missing after I went back to the store, but you don't think of that while opening a fresh container. Besides, it also had that foil cover so that right there tells you that it's ok. You don't really think about it. So after the return, when I got home, I notice the new container only has the cap with the snap ring, that tells you if it's been broken. It had no foil. I think some brands are different than others in the way they bottle them. I use Castrol on the truck & they use foil & a top with a tamper ring.
