Team sports players are overpaid... 100% not worth it, there should be a cap on their salaries.

I find this hard to believe. The average attendance of a game is around 25000 people. Average ticket price lets say is $50. That's 1.25 million per game just in ticket sales. Or 225 million per season. You really think it costs that much just to "keep the lights on"?

There is. At least in the NBA there is.. they predicted that if LeBron didn't have a salary cap he would make 3-5 times the amount he makes now

    Sports is entertainment...

...and the "coin of the realm" is captured attention. ;)

Captured attention is energy, and energy is money. So the more attention any entertainer is able to capture, the more money they make, not only for themselves, but for those for whom they work.

This whole entertainment industry is built upon the foundation of captured attention.

They're overpaid because they can be overpaid. It's a giant bidding war and whoever can give out the most money wins. MLB desperately needs a salary cap. Yankees, dodgers, and maybe Red sox payroll is over 200 mil I think and the Astros is barely above 30.

I can't remember where I read it, but I remember that on average a baseball stadium was supposed to cost about $300k a night to light it up. Then you have to take into account property taxes, payroll (sure, most get minimum wage, but you also have grounds keepers and electricians and the like) maintenance costs (replacement parts and repairs) and things add up. Just using your math above on the number of games in a season, it would cost the stadium $54M per season for JUST electricity. That is 25% of the income just on electricity alone. It is NOT cheap to keep a stadium open for sure.

And personally when we have our veterans barely making 30k a year, and athletes making $1M or more a year, then yes, they are overpaid...:D. That is of course my opinion.

Nit-picking but a team only gets 81 home games per year. Maybe 5-10 more if they make the playoffs. 81 x 1.25MM per game = 101.25MM

Of course ball players are overpaid, but arent they just taking what the owners are willing to pay them? Hence the reason for steroids and all the crap players do to stay on top. Short career, got to get it while you can. Average MLB salary is right around 3.5MM this year if I remember correctly.

teams play 81 home games, not 162. plus playoffs for a few, but those tickets are more expensive and have higher attendance.
based on $1.25M ticket revenue per game -> $101,250,000 per season.

based on info from the link below it costs nowhere near $300K to light up a stadium for a night.
it says it takes more than 1,000,000 watts to light up the padres stadium.
so even if calculated at 1,500,000 watts (1500kW) and $0.10/kWhr that's only $150/hr for lighting.

Right.. my bad on the calculations. Still a fairly large amount. I know ball parks are expensive but $100 mil a year expensive?

It's ridiculous to label athletes as being "overpaid". They work their asses off making close to nothing in the minor leagues and take the risk trying to make it to the show over getting a "secure" job. As long as organizations are willing to pay them the $ then what is the big deal? People pay to watch the games...it's not like money is just appearing out of nowhere and god decides to give it to baseball players.

I suppose in the grand scheme of things, it is silly that Justin Verlander makes more money in one game than most of us make in a year, but the bottom line is these guys have been competing against each other since they were 5 years old, knowing that the big guys get paid tons of money to play baseball. If you look at how many young children have the dream of playing pro baseball compared to how many actually make it into the majors, the money might be justifiable. .

So you don't compete against anyone in your workplace for a promotion? Its just like any other job.. they work to be better than the next person to get to the top.. that's what you do in any job.

Its ridiculous how much they make and then beg for more. I love sports and watching athletes play but they make way to much money

I just Googled how much it costs to light a stadium for a night. I think 4 sites showed an average cost of $300k to light it up, so I just went with that. As for the number of games, I took the post of 1.25 mil per game and divided it into the $225M per year that was mentioned and got 180. I don't watch baseball, so I wasn't sure. I do know that at Daytona International Speedway the average cost to light the grounds up is $750k per day. That includes the cost of running concessions, the interior lights and the exterior lights including the parking lot.

Think how much more profitable baseball or basketball could be if they went to tighter schedules and less operation costs. The owners win, but with every game having greater weight, so would the fans. I will never believe the owners of NFL teams aren't cleaning house on their 8 home games a season.

I believe it. Think of a football game. Avg ticket price is what 210? And 70000 in attendance. That's over 14 mil a game. So they are making more per season than the mlb with 73 less games

I don't think they're overpaid. Pro sports in the US is huge, everyone loves them in some way, it's a huge market. We all have the opportunity to do what they do, and we don't. So we can't really bitch.
