Driving tests need to be harder, and more people need to fail them.

I had a fun experience once parking on the other side of the street. That slope is so steep that it made my seat belt restrainers lock up - and I couldn't get out of the car!

That was about three weeks before I threw in the towel and got rid of the car entirely. San Francisco was the most fun place I've ever lived, but unless you shit thousand-dollar bills every morning, you can forget about owning a car, as you won't be able to afford a place with a garage. And you will need a garage. There is simply no parking. Really. Zero, zilch, nada. On the plus side, if you do have a place to park, the city will make you a really good driver. Bad drivers get in horrific wrecks very quickly up there.

Thankfully, public transit up there is really good and if you're young, stupid and brave like I was, you can bike that whole city. Including slopes like that. And the drivers are reasonably good with bikes; way better than any place in SoCal. I don't ride on the roads here. You'll get killed.

Man, now you got me missing my old city. I gotta get back up there for a weekend or so.

Agreed. Especially in Sacramento. Moving here and my insurance told me my rates would jump 30%. Just for changing zip codes!

    How does the song go?

    If you can park there,
    You can park anywhere,
    San Fran,
    San Fran!

    Oh wait, that's NY NY.

Yeah, it is a ton of fun. And driving there keeps you very focused. Parallel parking in reverse up hill with a manual...oh yeah.

And it is very hard to not hit the Steve McQueen button when driving there.

I've never lived in it, just north of it. When we go now, we generally get a room for a night or two when we find a deal, and then get cheap parking at the hotel, but use cabs or BART or cable cars the whole time. Or just walk!

I failed the first time back when I took it, the second time I got a 99. The only thing I did wrong the second time was one thing I did right the first time. I think it all depends on who you've got testing you that day and how far the stick up there ass is. The first time I had an old bitchy lady that fails everybody. The second time I had an old guy that I was bullshitting with during the whole test.

I HATE driving in SF...mostly because of everyone else. People get on your ass at stop signs and I almost rolled back into them a few times. I got REAL good at parallel parking during a week long trip there. We're headed there again this year when we go to Sacramento for the holidays.

oh and OP, practice and try again. Maybe you'll get a different examiner. I failed my first behind the wheel for something that supposedly was illegal:

I was at a stop sign, cross traffic had right of way and no sign. Stopping behind the line like I was supposed to, I could not see to my left or right due to bushes and other vehicles. After stopping behind the line, I pulled forward a foot and stopped again to make sure it was all clear. I went and after making my turn, he told me return to the office my test was over. DB failed me for doing something that everyone should do when objects are obstructing the view at intersections...

My test was in a snow storm... only had to go around the block.. only condition - spin the tires and automatic fail. No spun tires and I got my license :D Also had to paralell park.

    Good luck OP.

I think i may be one of few that actually doesn't mind parallel parking. For one thing, it definitely limits the amount of door dings I get :D

My driver's test went quite nicely. The tester (?) was a fellow hunter and we got on to that as a topic. We went through all the steps and I ended up making a 97/100. Only got knocked for not using my turn signals on every single step while parallel parking

    LOLWUT?????????????

Signal is to indicate a turn... not that you are turning your steering wheel.
Signal the intent to park, but once you begin to reverse into the spot, the signal is done until you are ready to leave.

If you are sitting there waiting to turn left and you are taking your time and someone runs into the back of you guess who's fault it is? The retard who ran into you.

And I'm going to throw this out there that for every close call caused by a timid driver, some hot headed ass who thinks he's speed racer cases 5 more. Timid drivers are annoying as fuck, but I wouldn't say they are worse than aggressive ones. Indecisive drivers, yes. But just playing it safer than the rear of us, no.
My truck is slow as shit. With even bigger tires, I will have zero acceleration. So it'll take me a while to cross an intersection lol

And then there is the manual transmission with the short first gear. Even with a V6, I still don't do jackrabbit starts. No, go ahead car behind me, run into my ass as we start from a fresh green light. Of course, no one even knows what a manual is any more, and don't leave and safe gap anyway.

    Everybody is retarded.

Well I am not even going to vote on this. Since that it's biased, we are only going to get one side of the story. Since none of us were there, except for you. We aren't going to be 100% sure if you are actually right(rather than what you wrote here), or the drivers tester.
