How old we're you when you got your 1st DL?

Another thread got me thinking about this. Seems almost like people are waiting later in life to get their drivers license and first vehicle. Even beyond regulatory requirements that may have upped the age requirement.

Where I lived at that time & age one could get their learners permit at 15 years, 1 month and actual drivers license at 15 years, 6 months.

I'll admit, even though I'm really laid back, I'm hyper as hell and wanna get shit done right now. That being the case I got my drivers license on the day I turned 15 years, 6 months. I had already bought my first POS $300 car and was driving it with learners permit (parents included). I got my learners permit, you guessed it, the first day I turned 15 years, 1 month.

That state also allowed exception for unusual circumstances for some that were even younger. I tried but, it was a no go.

Ohio's laws are 15.5 for temp permit and 16 for d.l. Did mine at those times mainly because i was forced to since I started working at 15.

In Alaska you can get a learners permit at 14 and your license at 16. I got both within a month of turning 14 and 16 I think.

I got my permit on the very first day I could at age 15 and a half. And I believe I got my license on the second day I could at age 16 & 3 months. (VA requires you to hold a permit 9 months)

I had just turned 15 - I wanted my license and bought a car for $1k from a used dealer (no paperwork involded other then getting the title)
my mom agreed to sign off on some paperwork that I found online stating I took home taught driving lessons.
I went to the DMV with her and they took my picture and sent me my license.

I was actually shocked that I got it with no computer test or driving test.

I wrecked a few vehicles between the age of 15 and 17 - but i think i got the hang of it now

Also for those who will ask - I bought my own cars - I lied on several application for employment when i was 14 and 15 and said i was 16 year old so that i can start working. Also when I was 14 I probably looked 10. I had some sucky jobs but I made a little bit of money at a young age.

Got permit at 15.5, license at 16 on my BD. First experience behind the wheel though was driving home from Colorado to Phoenix because my stepdad was too drunk that morning to drive. I was 14. Yikes.

I got my permit at 16 and my lic at 16 1/2. In Massachusetts you get the permit when you turn 16 and as long as you took driver's education you could get your lic at 16 1/2. I then got my motorcycle lic at 17.

In South Africa we had to be 18 to get a learners permit & license. I got my learners the day after my birthday, and my license a month later (minimum 1 month mandatory wait between learners and license).
I grew up on a 5,000 acre farm so I had been driving around alone on the farm since early teens though.

Although it sucks to have to wait that long, I actually don't think 15-year olds are responsible enough to drive (on the road). 18-year olds and for that matter 20-something year olds are sometimes too immature to understand the responsibility of driving. Just my opinion....

Been driving for a very long time, but wasn't able to get my hard copy license til I was 19, because I couldn't afford to take a driving class. (Cheapest one I'd seen was 300 bucks, and if you know me, you know that's a lot of money to me and my family.) So I had to wait until I was 19. Then I went up to DMV and drove an instructor around the block. Said I drove better than most of the other people she dealt with- didn't even freak out when a bunch of fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances blasted past me. Just pulled over like I was supposed to. Got my paper license that day, waited 7 days for the hard copy to arrive in the mail.
I drove around on my permit (sometimes by myself, illegal, I know.) for a long time- had that when I was 15.

Got a learner's permit at 15 1/2 so I could ride my first bike off the dealership's showroom floor.

...and still ride today, 48 years later.

It all depends on how they were raised, some 15 year olds are more mature than some 25 year olds.
My dad was driving dump trucks pulling trailer with dozers on them when he was 13, when he was 15 there was a big train wreck in the next town over and he had to drive the truck (loaded with a dozer on it) to the town to clear parts of the train off the tracks.

I was driving tractors and field cars in the single digits. Had my first motorcycle at 11.

I took an afternoon trip to the DMV one day a few months after I turned 16 to 'get legal'.

---

Funny part of the story, the day before my 'driving test' my dad dropped a 2X6 through the rafters above the garage and blew out the back window of the only 'street legal' car I owned.

I took the driving test in a car I had never driven.

I just about aced it ... the instructor docked me points for being 'too relaxed' and basically knowing how to drive.

The DMV in my home county shared a building with the DNR at the time. My neighbors wife worked at that DNR chapter and knew our family damn near like their own. I'd driven her around Rib Mountain state park a couple times in one of my winter field cars when we were tubing on the ski runs after hours, and she had heard of a bunch of nutballs doing something like this and asked me about it.

My license was already printed and waiting for me before we returned with the instructor and his 'scoring'.
