So something happened today that I thought I'd share cause it hit me in the feels.

About a decade ago when I was in the midst of 6th/7th grade, I used to catch the bus home.

I remember one day not being able to find a seat, and sitting next to this awkward white kid. He introduced himself and started the most annoying conversation ever... I distinctly remember the weirdest conversation about dandruff.

But I wasn't a dick and kept my side of the conversation up because even back then I noticed this kid sounded like he just needed someone to talk to. Our school was really small, and I couldn't recall this kid ever hanging out with anyone.

From that day on....He'd seek me out and sit next to me on the bus rides home, and always talked about the most annoying stuff. Sometimes it got unbearable so I'd just pretend to take a nap. Through the weird bs I noticed he'd slip little things about not having friends or tidbits about his parents fighting...So I just talked to him. This went on for the entire year, until I assume he switched schools.

Fast forward a decade and I'm on a plane heading back to school. While standing in line, this guy comes up to me and introduces himself as that same kid. While on the plane he switches out with a lady sitting next to me so that she can sit with her fam, and he takes her seat...I expected one of those weird convos from back in the day but a decade has obviously matured us both.

He said he sat next to me to thank me for being nice to him all those years earlier. He went on to explain how he had a hard time in middle school and didn't have anyone to talk to, and that he knew he was really weird. He explained the depth of his puberty awkwardness depression/loneliness throughout the flight. As we deplaned he shook my hand and told me just talking to him helped him a lot, and that he was grateful- and that now he was a university student with a lot of friends.

So, sometimes the little things help.

    TL;DR-
Don't be a dick, you might help someone that really needs it.

Good on you for not being the typical asshole.

Konaborne, what enabled you to tolerate this individual and treat him with respect? It's a million dollar answer if you have it. Most of us would have avoided him like the plague. Good for you and glad you received a thanks.

    Cool story.

Sorta similar for me that in elementary school I befriend a not so popular kid, not that I was the most but still. Anyway he was a heavy awkward kid similar to what you described. Lost track of him after elementary school. Now about 30 years later we connect through Facebook and he's apparently a womanizing stud! Always posting pics of himself with some real hotties. Turned out to be more popular and cool than any of the rest of us as far as I know. Not that I'm worried about that, just surprised me of all people that he turned out the way he did. He slimmed down and apparently gets all the women he wants, or at least that is how he's portraying himself. He works for Nopi so all the hot women pics could just be pics of opportunity with the models. :notsure:

Also on the flip side of this I know some of the cool kids from school that turned out to be not so cool or fortunate. So the point is you just never know?

I should preface this whole thing with saying that the point of this thread are the last two sentences, not that I want a pat on the back.
