About a year ago I loaned $2000 to a family member, it was promised to be paid back as soon as "they caught up".... I have asked for it many times without getting rude and pissed. A few hundred has been given here and there. The last discussion was about 2 weeks ago, where she agreed to pay me $100 every 2 weeks until its paid off.

I have noticed for the last month shes been spending money like crazy..new LCD tv, bose surround sound, kitchen stuff, flowers, bushes, dirt and bricks for the yard. Fed-Ex or UPS seems to be delivering something she ordered from the internet every fucking week.

I have reached my boiling point, and need your help on what to do!

Maybe i should just forget about it and accept the loss.....

    PLEASE ADVISE!!

Call her out on it. Tell her that you've noticed all of these purchases and you need your money back. Don't take that 100 every 2 weeks BS, because all she'll do is pay you a few times and then claim to be a bit short.

Well, it really depends - this could be a sticky situation.

    My suggestions:
    1. If the relationship means a lot to you, then you might have to just eat your loss.

    2. If you're willing to risk the relationship (not saying it WILL go bad, but it could strain things for a while), then I'd say draw up an informal contract where the two of you come to terms on some sort of periodic payment > $100 (with interest now since she's already considered delinquent). The two of you sign this document and hope it ends quickly, then never lend to a family member again.

    3. If you really don't care about the relationship, then take her to small claims court.

I loaned my sister $5000 once. I actually did paperwork like a bank would, a payment with interest. Her actions were similiar to what you described though she bought clothes & it made me upset. She did finally pay me back 100% plus interest but it took awhile. Now I do not give money anyone unless its a gift. Its easier that way.

Wish you the best in your situation neon.

The thing is she didnt even need the $2000 at the time. She knew I had just got a settlement from a lawsuit. SHE has money, she has the money in her bank account....no doubt about it.

I have called her out!! Hell, I had to pick up the TV and Bose system in my taco! LOL

She knows I want the money, maybe she assumes I have money and dont need it. I dont know how much more firm in can be without getting rude.

    Grrrrrrrrr

My rule is "Never lend more than you can afford to lose."

My guess is she's buying all that stuff on extended credit and doesn't/won't have the cash to pay all that off either.

Go take the LCD TV as collateral and sell it if she doesn't come up with the cash.

I would recommend that you not get rude, but you do have to be firm. And quit picking up stuff she is buying until you get your money back.
