world's Largest cruise ship.

Since we were on the subject of big machines yesterday I thought I'd bring this one up- the world's largest cruise ship called Oasis of the Seas, which will be completed this year. This thing is massive. It will weigh 220,000 tons. For comparison, yesterday's giant earth moving machine weighed "just" 45,000 tons. The next biggest cruise ship is 150,000 tons. Another comparison: The USS Ronald Reagen, which is the world's largest Aircraft carrier weighs 95,000 tons.

Specs:
220,000 Tons
1,181 ft (360 m) long
154 ft (47 m) wide
16 Passenger Decks
8 Wärtsilä V12 Engine @ 17,500 hp each
5,400 passengers double occupancy (about 7,300 including third and fourth passengers)

I've never been on a cruise but really want to go on one. Since I live on the CA coast, its tempting because due to the recession, Royal Carribbean and Carnival are offering cheap deals. Like 4 days cruises for $350 or so.

What kind of stuff is there to do on these things? Just get drunk and eat food? I like machinery, so for me it would be more because of the ship.

There is a ton of stuff to do onboard those ships. Dance, drink, swim, golf, rock wall climbs, casinos, water slides, etc.. I've had fun on all the cruises I've taken over the years. Some of the private islands they own are quite an experience.
Shop for a decent deal and have fun.

We Cruised the South Carribean last year on the Adventure of the Seas (currently the largest cruise liner in the RC fleet). This was my first experience with a mega ship and I was less than impressed.

Sure, it's size is impressive and the activities are endless but the service leaves a lot to be desired. It's just TOO big to have the personal touch that smaller boats have. On a smaller boat, you get to know people and see them around the boat.

It's also so big that going back to your room or "running up to the pool" takes a lot longer and wears you out. Yeah, it's nice to have 23 bars to choose from but do you really need that many options for 5 days? I would rather have 5 bars where I see people I have gotten to know.

Also, more passengers means more chance for trashy and dirty people around you. People think they can just drop garbage where ever because the boat is so big no one will ever know. It is also difficult to get a good lounge chair around the pool. People show up at 7:am to mark off whole rows of chairs.

We had a rock climbing wall, miniature golf course, ice skating rink, roller blade track, basketball courts, volleyball courts and a ton of other stuff. You spend most of your time on the islands and never get to use any of that stuff. The time on the boat is spent eating or lounging around the pool.

Celebrity Galaxy was by FAR my favorite boat. It has a 2:1 staff to passenger ratio and a lot of personal touch. You get to know the staff members and they really take care of you. I strongly recommend the Galaxy boat!

Definitely not interested in a boat this size!

Problem is you also have to buy a plane ticket to whereever the ship is leaving from.

Nah... I can drive there since I live pretty close. As far as ships being too big, I kind of wondered about that. My folks take cruises on occasion and recently went on a 40,000 ton 20 year old cruise ship and liked that one much more than the larger newer ships they've been on.

I can't imagine being on a 220,000 ton ship because there's a old WW2 era aircraft carrier near me and that thing is so large that it takes all day to go through. I think its only around 40,000 tons.

I've never been either, but I hear that's what you do. Drink, relax, gamble if provided, and rollerblade on some.

It's pretty dope though. I saw that ad for 350. I was like, "what??" I'm planning a trip this summer. Why not?

I've heard that they screw you with the drinks because they charge out the wazoo. My parents said they don't allow you to bring your own drinks either.

I've never brought my own booze on board, but from what I understand, it's allowed (probably to a limited degree) but you have to surrender it upon embarkation. Then, you pay a corking fee and the waiter serves it to you at dinner (at least on Royal Caribbean).

I have heard of a few people that take large shampoo bottles, wash them out THOROUGHLY, then fill them with booze.

I never really drank on the cruise ships, but mainly because I didn't want to waste half of or a whole day with a hangover...

Man... sounds like a diarrhea disaster waiting to happen. It would be even worse on a ship! Maybe you could put vodka in water bottles or mix whiskey with coke in coke bottles.

You just gotta know the tricks Theres a product online you can get called rum runners. Some people i know use em all the time and never get caught.

But as for the original topic, I cant imagine how big that ship is in real life. Two years ago we went on our first cruise. It was Royal Carribeans freedom of the seas. I think at the time it was the biggest ship out. It has so much stuff to do. Theres even some kinda surfin thing on the back of the boat.

Can't stress enough that you will enjoy a small ship more than a large one.

The only time a large ship is fun is the first day. That is when you explore and are in awe at how large they build things.

As for bringing on liquor...you buy it at the port and just try to sneak it in. You can buy Captain Morgan for 1/4 of what they charge in the US. Stick it in your bag and walk through the metal detector. Last year, we got 6-7 bottles in. If they do catch it, just play dumb and they hold it for you until the last day where it will be delivered to your room. That is how you are supposed to do it.

If you are driving, you can get a crap load of liquor for real cheap. If you are flying, remember that you are not allowed to bring it on board the plane.
