I have a complete set of tools but I moved recently and I cant get them because they are in a family members storage unit and they are on vacation for 2 months.

I just bought a new part for my Tacoma and I was planning on paying a shop to install it but they want prices that are too high and I can do it myself pretty easily, I just don't have any tools.

My solution ? I thinking of just going over to a large store and buying a 2 wrenches and maybe a ratchet, install the part and then take the tools back for a refund.

    Is that ethical ?

I wouldn't do it. Of course you CAN do it, but it just wouldn't feel right to me. I would probably go cut the lock off the storage unit and get your tools, then just buy a new lock and give them the key when they get back.

My friend does things like that all the time.

His most recent "event", he bought a tent because a group of us went camping for 2 days. He ripped it and it was his fault and he went in Sunday evening after we got back to return it; successfully.

I cannot count how many times he has done that, but it's a lot.

Well if you go to Harbor Freight the tools will most likely break after one use anyway so you'll just be returning broken tools.

I've been in this apartment for only 2 months and the people here are jerks. I saw some Hawaiian dudes who work on a modified civic regularly but I haven't seen them for weeks.

Maybe i'll just return half the tools.

I've done stuff like this before, and will in the future. Large companies can take a small hit. Not to mention I would purchase dinged tools that worked if I was going to keep them. I would never do it to a mom & pop, though.

I was part way kidding, I have multiple black impact sockets and other things that have been used for years from them. But also have broken 1/2 inch drive ratchets in one job. I think we can all agree that most stuff at HF is junk, but there are SOME dependable tools.

Still not the ethical thing to do. When you look at it your way, sure a big company can take a small hit, but what is 50, 100, or 1000 people do the same thing, using your mentality? Well then it is not a small hit, it is a BIG hit. End result is that they jack their prices to compensate for the loss, and those people who DO have ethics are the ones who pay for your deed.

Not saying this as an attack, just pointing out how it isn't as black and white as you think.

They are retarded and we can't fix stupied so I won't even try to explain to them why it is bad and why they should care because they won't understand it anyway.

Just go to Autozone or Advanced, they rent tools for free. You basically buy the tool set then when you return it, you get the cost back. The same idea as what you said but not sleezy.

Two wrenches and a ratchet would be like $20, even for decent tools, is that really that big of a deal?
