Sometimes if you push the middle section in with a pen it releases it. I recall an office door at my old work having something similar. Where you could lock the mechanism in by pushing it further than 'flush' with the door edge. Idk if it makes sense but try pushing the parts, is there any play in it? Or does it feel jammed?
Ive looked it up a bit, its an L series from Schlage but nothings in the manuals shows troubleshooting. The hole on top of the latch is the pivot pin for the 2 pieces. the center piece moves independently of the upper/lower pieces. If you look close enough the middle piece has a cutout and a lip. I believe that is what's holding it in. Maybe try pushing on it while depressing a door handle? Idk what else if you've already given it a few good whacks.

Grasping at straws here... When you get a screw driver, take that plate off. My door looks just like that, however, I have a switch below there so I can keep it locked or in place. Maybe they replaced the plate for the one you have and the switch is behind it :notsure:

I don't have a screw driver, I would have to grab one from home tomorrow
I think there is a pin in there holding it back but I don't know how to release iT

OK finally somewhere I can chime in.... I'm a commercial building engineer. That's a Schlage L series Mortise lockset. Remove the two Phillips head screws holding the plate on the edge of the door... that may be enough to release the bolt. Mortise lockset inside the door may be off center. big screw driver slid in beside it will adjust. re-install the plate on the edge of the door. Has nothing to do with the holes in the handles. those are for a spanner wrench used to remove the handles.

How many TW members does it take to fix a door?

Ghostperiod, I'm rather disappointed that you don't keep basic tools in your office, and that this door is even still on it's hinges and not being secretly swapped out with a mean coworker's during lunch break

So it's not a multi function mortise set like the type where you push in to keep it from locking ?

No not unless someone has installed the wrong cover plate.

Look closely at the center strike (of the three piece strike) the center is rolled out of position. removing the plate should allow it to return to normal position.

Ah , I see what you are saying not , the guts aren't aligning with the decorative plate

I have very little experience with mortise lock sets , the few I have dealt with in renos of old houses had the multi fuction style lock

I should have done one when I made my Halloween costume. That was a day long event though. Actually took two days. Got too drunk one night and my stitches were way off lol.

I will have a new one soon

Kick the door shut as hard as you can exactly 3 times and on the 3rd time it will latch. Works 60% of the time, every time.
