My wife and I have been looking for MONTHS for a good used Elantra. After scanning Craigslist and Autotrader daily we finally found a few deals on some Elantra's at our local dealership.

The two options we were looking at were as follows:

'13 Elantra Limited with 28,000 miles for $14,991 . Certified with one previous owner.

'13 Elantra SE with 38,000 miles for $14,581. Not certified with two previous owners.

As we were talking with the salesman and he mentioned buying a new car for "almost the same price." Of course I was expecting the sales pitch eventually but was willing to hear him out.

The salesman showed us a new 2015 Elantra that had 550 miles on it. According to the salesman the car was sold to a young female. After driving the car for a week she had to take the car back to the dealership to give them her paystubs to provide proof of income. When they looked at the paystubs they realized the stubs were from a Temp Agency, so they had to take the car back from her.

We were able to work with the salesman and get the price of the car down to $15,113 which came to $17,063 out the door after taxes, doc fees etc.... The dealership claims we are technically the first owners of the car since she never had the title (I think I'll have them give me a Carfax to confirm we're the first owners of the vehicle).

Is there any reason I wouldn't buy a 2015 Elantra for $15,113 with 550 miles (plus two years of free oil changes) over buying a used/certified Elantra with 25,000-35,000 miles for $14,500-15,000??? I know it sounds like a no-brainer, I just want to know if I'm not over looking something here...

I've always had issues with brand new cars being returned with so few miles. Sure it could be she couldn't afford it, or it could be some major underlying issue.

What I would do is request to take the new car to your mechanic and have them inspect it before you buy it to ensure that there is nothing major going on that you are missing.

If you need a mechanic post up in the AZ BS thread and I'm sure someone can recommend one to you.

That salesman story is total bullshit. Ask him to put that in writing.

The dealership didn't want proof of income before selling this young girl the car? Are the options the same? Engine ?

If you buy it, make sure that ALL paperwork states that it is being sold as new with ALL warranties fully available. Also, talk them into giving you a spare tire. My dad had to buy one because he forgot to check and it only had a can of fix a flat and one if those small 12v compressors.

I am aware it doesn't come with a spare tire.

Salesman said that it would still have the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty and that it would still have the 60,000 (maybe it was 80k) bumper to bumper warranty.

I've driven the car about 60 miles and everything seems normal to me. We got to "take the car home for the night" I was fully aware it was a selling tactic. But figured it'd give me a chance to drive it work work (50 miles round trip on freeway, side streets) plus drive it to and from the dealership which is about 40 miles round trip.

Just to add credit to the salesman's story, one of my work friends just bought a 2015 Mitsubishi Evo X (brand new, like 11 miles on it) at a dealership in San Diego. He took the car, and like 3 days later got a call saying they needed to see another one of his pay stubs. apparently the one he originally gave them he had only worked 60 something hours instead of his normal 80 hour pay period so the finance department needed more proof of his income. He got to keep the car but I can easily imagine a situation like that of the OPs car. Idk what the process is as far as the dealership is concerned, or why these problems arent noticed before a car makes it off the lot, but mistakes do happen.

Yeah I'm hoping it was a situation like that. The wife is super excited for a new car. She's been driving the same beat-up '99 Sentra since she was 16, she's now about 25.

Why, I've had ZERO problems with mine! When I bought it it was about the best bang for your buck performance wise there was. Quick, handles great, stops great & very fun to drive!IMAG1292_zpsdlk6luhx_8936c992714be32541f4e5b8d7b1175c4073bb20.jpg

Haha thanks! My first car was a '01 Hyundai Accent. Slowest car in the world but it worked awesome and never had any issues with it at all. I'd think Hyundai have only gotten better since then.

When I started looking to but my first Tacoma back in '14, I started by looking at used ones. Found a cherry on the lot, '12, low miles, nice , black, v6, drove it, loved it. It had this gauge thing hanging below the rearview mirror, thought nothing of it. Asked him, he had no flippin idea what it was. I now know it was a scangauge. Anyways, I asked the salesman to find out the story on this one. He went and talked to his sales manager and came back with the "little old lady" story. LOL. I ended up buying a new Taco, and now know he was full of poop. No little old lady would have a scangauge. Moral of story, dont trust the salesman !

That's my thinking. I just don't want to drop all that money on a car that's not going to work. We're paying cash for it and worked/saved hard to get it.

Probably not a camry, but a corolla would be possible. I've seen three corollas over 200k in my family (280k, 220k, 250k). Two are still running, one got t-boned and totaled. Not a lick of major issues with any. If I was ever going to get a car for commuting, I'd get a corolla.
