3". There is a brace you can't see in the railing actually making the gap less. Rail height is 36". spindles are 4" center to center.

For us, inline railings (like yours) have to be over the decking. To do it the way your deck is we would have to do a cantilevered railing system (pickets extended down and fastened to the rim joists).

I like the look of that product. Used a fair bit of trex decking and I am not a fan of the fake pattern embossed on it. Not to mention it moulds in our climate and gets covered in lil black dots

They were originally fastened to the joists. But if we had bought the spindles that did that I would have been looking at 3 bucks a spindle!

This is called natural reversible. It's semi hollow inside, has 2 patterns one of which would be better for wet climates. It's made with wood ingrained in the plastic

oddly, the Standata (Alberta interpretations of the CEC) is not enforceable, it's just guidelines and preferred methods.

Trex is similar but for some reason it moulds up here. Have to use a bleach like cleaner each year and scrub the shit out of it to get rid of the mould spots

it's definitely in your best interest to keep the inspection authourity happy, but if you meet the requirements of the CEC there's not much they can do from a legal standpoint.

Not sure that is the same for the BCBC as things like rainscreen and seismic requirements that aren't national standards are most certainly enforced here

This is ultradeck. They have a bunch of different types. Some are expensive... This was the least expensive you actually replace the boards with. It doesn't mold as bad as the trex from what I have read. My renters will know to wash it once a year with soap though.

They have some that you just screw over your existing deck boards to conceal your old deck

Lol I have saw those. Walmart even has a 'repair kit' for old decking. It's a jug of glue and a roll of paper or foil or whatever crap lol
