Hey Ese, don't give up hope working in the industry. There are ways of getting where you want without having to go through one of the academies. Good luck with things!

Yeah I went to CMA. Enjoyed every minute. So your a Mass guy huh? That's cool. Haven't met too many of you guys. Great to hear your a River Pilot. My goal is to be a pilot in LA Harbor. I've got the license now it's time to wait and gain the experience. How long have you been a River Pilot?

Just like DelRivr said. Its never too late for a career change. Whenever things get cleared up, go for it. When I was at CMA there were guys in their mid-50's going through. They made it just fine. If you like boats and the water, there is no better place.

Hey Tug, 9 years on the river. Sailed deep sea for about 10 all together. Use to make the Valdez/Long Beach run. Only met a couple of CMA guys. If you want to pilot, be persistent. THere are pilots in my assoc. who tried to get in for 11 years, and then finally did. Good luck to you. It beats going to sea!

you ever heard of anyone majoring in marine transportation with a misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge? i know this isn't something that should really be aired on an online forum but i feel comfortable with it considering its now an uncommon thing.

goin to CMA and majoring in marine transportation was my initial college plan but when i was arrested the idea kinda went away. my logic was that if my friend with a charge of possession of paraphernalia couldn't get his 6-pack license there was no way the coast guard would let me get my third mates ticket.

I heard they aren't fans of drug charges no matter the degree of severity.

anything wrong with my logic? you know anyone who has had a similar record yet still gotten their license?

sorry for the thread jacking

Wow, right on. I appreciate the adive. I've been nagging at their heel for a while and going on a bunch of rides. Like I said just takes time now. Who did you sail with Deep Sea? Was that an Exxon run? I went staight to tugs after graduating and really enjoy the schedule. 2 weeks on 2 off. No complaints there. I bet the schedule for you isn't too bad either.
Do you have some more pictures of the river?

Hmm...good question. I know that when you fill out Coast Guard forms for your license they ask about your record. Since it was a misdemeanor you might still be able to apply. Don't quote me on that, but it sure would'nt hurt to ask the CG. It just might take longer to pass all the background checks.

I'm not on the licensing side of the Coast Guard- but you are very likely not going to be able to get a license with that kind of history. It's not certain- but they are fairly stringent.

Doesn't stop you from trying- There are folks in the Coast Guard and other services with prior drug charges. Best of luck!

My dad was a docking pilot in Boston. I grew up on the tugs. Great porn libraries!(sorry, got side tracked) I was lucky to sail all over the world on tankers. A stint with Mobil, AT & T(American Trading and Trans), Coastal, etc.

Keep making the trips and let the guys see who you are and let them get to know you. That helps a lot. They love guys who have a lot of tug time. Sounds like you do. Keep doing what you are doing and I am sure something will open. Harbor pilots are pretty sharp. Great boat handlers. I have a ton of river pics and will send on a few. Good luck to you. The Ese guy, I wish I could be of more help. Kind of a pickle with the drug wrap.

yeah, thats what i figured, kinda why i turned down the CMA idea, it would suck to go through 4 years of school and then come graduation time find out i can't get my license.

Sorry to be a debbie downer like that...It's worth calling and asking at least- Seeing if there is anything you can do to is the only chance you've got. If you don't ask at all- You'll never get anywhere.

Ese, call any Regional Exam Center and ask for someone in their licensing dept. Not sure, but they may have a statute of limitations on those kind of offenses. It's worth the ask. Also, I know this sounds funny, but call a couple of them, because believe it or not, you will sometimes get different answers. Best of luck to you!
