A little to doom and gloom for my taste and also a little abrasive being stereotyped as a nation of idiots.

The thing is, our currency is effectively, if not officially, backed by oil. Nixon convincing OPEC to price oil in US dollars was quite an economic coup. It puts a demand for US dollars on the international market for everyone who wants to buy oil. The rising cost of oil has indirectly fueled our economy for the past 50 years.

If/when OPEC decides to move away from the US dollar, that's when our troubles would truly start.
