I've been meaning on taking my Boxer for a walk but since my prerunner is a single cab and no room for my boxer to sit in the truck with my wife and I..I was wondering if its legal to drive with my boxer tied in my truck bed?

And if its not legal...I guess the next step would be to buy a dog cage right?

its probably legal, but more humane for a cage properly secured at least.

As far as i know its legal. If not then I've broken the law a handful of times.

i dont see why it would be illegal but my dogs have always rode in the bed without being tied down and i have never had one jump out or anything.

Can't help you out with the law in the states. I know people do it in my area.

Just keep in mind that in the event of an accident, if the dog is tied to the truck, he's going with it.

    Roll-over = Very bad.

Before I had an access cab truck, my guys would ride in the back - tied up all snug and secure.

    Some tips:
01: Get a good quality harness for your dog. The kind that goes around their chest. Would you use your seatbelt if it was designed to only go around your neck?

02: Make sure the tether you use is the right length - not so long they can get part way over the side, and not so short that they can lie down. Also, it should be short enough that they can't stick their head in the slipstream. They love it - but it's not fun taking them to the vet when a bug or rock hits them in the eye.

03: Have some kind of a truck bed mat - those Tacoma beds are slippery!

Those are some very good points Gozar, but I would also like to add a tip too.

Before transporting the dog in the back/bed of the truck, I would recommend checking the temperature of the floor of the bed. Put your hand down on the bed flat, if you can't hold your hands down for a long time than it may be too hot. It could be too hot for the dogs sensitive paws and very uncomfortable, and may cause them to try to jump out or run back and fourth in a unsafe manner.

Even with the Toyota rubber floor mats and the plastic bed the bed can get real hot. Try standing barefoot on the hot cement, than you will know.
