They drain the oil and then put in 2 qts or Water/Silica/Sand and then run it until it seizes. Just saw it on one of the clips.

I actually benefitted from this program alot. I had an old worn out 1992 Chevy S-10 that was worth like $650. My combined fuel mileage was like 16mpg. I traded it for a brand new 2009 Mazdaspeed 6 and they gave me $4500 as trade in for the pickup. My only thing was that I wanted to seize the engine in it myself.

I would never trade anything other then an old Clunker. The ones that trade in the really nice ones should be shot. I would have love to have that Toyota and would have given the dude the $4500 for it. I guess some people are just lazy

    I traded in my 97' 4Runner Limited 4x4 and I miss that truck :(

It had a lot of problems (air conditioning, tranny was going, breaks etc..) and 110,000+ miles on it

jezz..... that is painful to watch. you can tell the guy with the camera is genuinely hurt to have to do that. i dont udnerstand the point of destroying them. why not sell them at auction for dirt cheap. make a little of your cash back?

That hurt to see the land cruiser go....

The purpose behind the cash for clunkers was to get the gas guzzlers off the road....

in our current state the economy should come before environmentalism. the cash for clunkers stimulated the economy a little but it would have made more sense to resell all the cars at a government auction for dirt cheap so they could have made back at least a small fraction of their money. i swear the government is fucking retarded (that comment is about the government in general, no specific party and not meant to start a political debate. so dont)

perhaps the reason (or at least one of them) to get the gas guzzlers off the roads isn't so much to protect the environment (though I'm sure it plays a part) but to decrease our dependency on foreign oil by not needing as much of it... this would would definitely have an effect on our economy

    Meh. Not exactly earth shattering.

The cash for clunkers program resulted in about 700,000 purchases with an average mpg of 24.9 for the new vehicle vs. 15.9 for the trade in vehicles. So on average, we saved about 9.1 mpg.
Over a 12,000 mile of driving (about 1 year) that amounts to about 194,296,172 gallons of gasoline saved.
There are about 42 gallons of gasoline in a barrel so we saved 4,626,099 barrels of oil in a one year period.
The US uses about 19,900,000 barrels of oil every day. Over a year, that's about 7.26 Billion barrels of oil used. Savings total is about 0.06% cut in oil usage. About 56% of our oil is imported so you're reducing imports by 0.036%. That means we could stop importing oil from the Bahamas (about 2.6 million barrels/year) and cut most of Latvia's imports (about 2.3 million barrels/year)

Actually it's just words and numbers. I spared you the formulas. However, you can just read the first and last sentences to get the gist.:D

Still looks like math to me. you know, the kind you have to do in high school. if a train leaves denver at 4:00pm at 56mph, and another train leaves L.A. at 6:23pm at 46 mph, how many perfectly good vehicles do you have to destroy so the government looks like its doing something?
