The new NC Smoking Ban goes into effect today (1/1) and it bans smoking in all public places. Personally, I am not fond of smoking, and don't like it when it I get a whiff in a restaurant, etc, but restaurants should have the right to decide if they want to be smoke-free or not. It should not be in the governments jurisdiction to tamper with stuff like this. Heres a link.

How does the state with the highest tobacco production do this?

I would respond to this question with the truthful answer, but I will be quickly reprimanded because it is against forum rules.

i guess your right...smoking is a horrible thing but if a place of business wishes to have a smoking section or jsut a smoking environment then they should be allowed to do so. if you dont like it and fear for your health then eat or drink somewhere F*&%ing else. i guess its that simple. i'm a big fan of letting folks live how they want as long as they are not forcing it on someone else or affecting them in a hurtful way.

NC banning smoking is like NY banning Dairy products.

I smoke, but if someone was to ask me to put it out (as long as they were not being assholeish about it) I would. But if I am outside smoking who am I really hurting? Restaurants I can understand, but bars? You should be able to smoke in a bar if you want to.

i have mixed emotions. in Greenville SC the smoking ban has been in place for around a year. personally, i dont smoke. so its nice to go out to a bar and not come home smelling like an ash tray. but, these are private business's. i don't see how the gov has the right to tell them they can't smoke in their own private establishment. strangely enough, private bars (membership only) can still smoke. so if i go to a private bar or a strip club i can still smoke in public. at least last time i was in a strip club (6 months ago or so) i could smoke, not sure if that has changed or not

VA has been this way for a few months.. Some places still have smoking sections, they just have to be completely separate (walls and a door) from the nonsmoking section..

It's nice to go into establishments and not breathe smoke. Smokers should smoke outside...

In El Cajon, CA it is illegal to smoke in public! The law goes too far and as best as most of us can tell is not enforced. You can read about it here.

I also now enjoy smoke-free public establishments, but I do think it should be ok to smoke in bars. It give me a reason not to go there, and it keeps the riff-raff inside, and not out on the curb causing problems for people passing by.

PA is smoke free. I think though, there are some rule about if people buy a certain amount more alcohol compared to food then the establishment can have smoking.

so some bars here offer free food (like wings) if you buy alcohol.

washington has had this law for a couple years. im not a smoker and i cant stand the smell to be honest. but the liberals up north think its 'the right thing' to do. they've gone as far as closing down tobacco shops that still allow people to smoke.

They use to have that exemption in my state but now have expanded it to all clubs/bars/restaurants, no exceptions. Its weird to see chairs outside in the middle of winter with folks bundled up like kegs on legs puffin' away.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em :D
