Toyota voluntary recall

Frequently Asked Questions About Toyota’s Voluntary Recall – 1/27/10

Towne Toyota has set up this FAQ page to answer your questions and address your concerns about Toyota’s voluntary recall.Towne Toyota will update this page with up to the minute information as Toyota releases it to us. You can bookmark this page, visit often and stay up to date.

First, it’s most important to note that the recall DOES NOT AFFECT ALL TOYOTA VEHICLES. A certain number of models, produced in certain factories are affected. Click here to see a complete list of the vehicles that are affected by this recall.
What is the problem?

According to Toyota: “In rare instances, there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

Is my vehicle affected by voluntary recall?

The voluntary recall only affects specific models. A list of those models and how to identify them can be found here.

Even if you do have one of these models, according to Toyota, it’s unlikely you’ll experience the problem at all: “The incidence of this condition is rare and occurs gradually over a period of time. It can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.”

However, despite how unlikely it is that you’ll experience the problem, Toyota has issued this voluntary recall to make sure that all Toyotas are safe and reliable.

Do I need to stop driving my vehicle?

Toyota has not stated that you need to stop driving your vehicle or that it is inherently unsafe to drive, however, it is very important that you be aware of the condition, know how to identify it and understand what to do if it happens to you.
What do I do if I encounter a partially stuck pedal or one that returns slowly to idle?

Each circumstance may vary, and drivers must use their best judgment, but Toyota recommends taking one of following actions:
  • If you need to stop immediately, the vehicle can be controlled by stepping on the brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the brake pedal as it will deplete the vacuum utilized for the power brake assist.
  • Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
  • If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
  • If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.
  • If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.
Who issued this recall?

Toyota has voluntarily issued this recall without any government or agency intervention. Toyota felt that it was important to maintain the utmost quality and reliability of their products. Towne Toyota is extremely proud of the proactive approach Toyota has taken to resolving this issue and is reassured as to our decision to represent Toyota products and services.

You take it into the stealership and they install a little microphone tied into the ecu, when it hears the words "Oh fuk we are all gonna die!!!!!" it cuts the power to the injectors and you coast to a stop
