An Elkton man in search of beer money allegedly attempted to mug a uniformed sheriff’s deputy on Monday as the on-duty officer sat in his patrol car.

Dfc. Jesse Alexander was sitting in a marked patrol car parked in front of Wright’s Country Deli at 1829 E. Old Philadelphia Road about 11 a.m. when 47-year-old Walter A. Mitchem walked up and twice demanded that the officer provide him with money so he could buy beer, according to Lt. Bernard Chiominto, a spokesman for the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office.
