Our entire political system (both sides included) is broken. The country is falling apart and each side of Congress obstructs the other side like tit for tat kindergardeners.

There are SO MANY important things to fix like wars, economies, government corruption, yada yada yada.

"Hey, I know a way to divert attention away from how jacked up we are, let's go fuck with Toyota whose cars have killed like 16 people and make sure the media stirs it up into a frenzy." (For comparison, in 2009, 34 people died by lightning strikes.)

Watch Congressional hearings?

Are you mad?

Toyota issues aside, Congress is all about posturing and making sure you have the proper look of indignation on your face to convince your constituents that you're "very concerned".

Don't believe me? What was all the Congressional hullabaloo over steroids? Did Congress really need to speak with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Mr. Viagra (Rafael Palmiero)?

Was talking to them really going to fix anything? Is trying to embarass Mr. Toyoda going to make people safer?

Why not just send a couple of expert government car techs to HELP when a car company has a technical snafu?

I'm not saying Toyota shouldn't shoulder some good portion of responsibility here, but trashing a company and hauling its executives before Congress doesn't seem like a good way to fix the problem...

Agreed.. Honestly I am in the software development industry and coding is the same way across the board. Nothing is perfect. Code is always open to faults and no matter how much you try to make it fool proof it never will .

I think its a matter of everyones at fault. Toyota for not taking this into consideration, and the government. But I think this is an issue of a bug yes but I think this is getting WAY blown out of proportion.

I think what you have here is the old "watch this hand" while the other hand is doing the "switcher-roo" and dodging the real news - people are unemployed, the economy sucks, people have and are losing their houses and can't afford to eat and you want to talk about Toyota recall and healthcare. Get people employed so they can afford a living then you can "fix" the other issues.
And Toyota rode the crest of a wave of knocking off the good ol' boy big 3 automakers. Is it too much to suspect that there is just too much noise being made about this recall all of a sudden (i.e. like there is no other "REAL" news). Look historically at other auto issues, anyone remember the (GM) Corvair and the carbon monoxide pouring into the passenger section of the car? What about the "explosive" (Ford) Pinto, remember the auto crashes that turned it into a "bomb on 4 wheels?" I don't recall nearly the issue made with these that is being made out of this Toyota recall and really do suspect it's more "retro-bution" for daring to overtake the big 3 at "their own game." Yes, maybe quality did slip but c'mon, tell me who's quality hasn't slipped for the sake of quantity?
1981 - GM recalled 5.8 million vehicles due to loose suspension bolts that affected steering.
July 1998 - GM recalled close to 1 million Cadillac, Pontiac and Chevrolet cars because of fears that the air bags may have deployed by accident.
2004 - GM recalled nearly 4 million pickups because of corroding tailgate cables.
April 2005 - GM said it was recalling more than 2 million vehicles to fix a variety of potential safety defects, most of them on cars and trucks sold in the U.S.
-- GM said the largest of the safety actions included 1.5 million full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles from the 2003 to 2005 model years with second-row seat belts that may be difficult to properly position across passengers' hips.
Dec. 2007 - Chrysler LLC said it would recall 575,417 vehicles as long-term wear on the gear shift assembly could cause them to shift out of park without the key in the ignition.
Aug. 2008 - GM announced a recall of 857,735 vehicles equipped with a heated windshield wiper fluid system for a potential short-circuit problem, according to federal safety regulators.
Sept. 2009 - Toyota said it would recall approximately 3.8 million vehicles in the U.S. because of floor mats that could have come loose and force down the accelerator. The problem was suspected in crashes that have killed five people.
Oct. 2009 - Ford completed a series of recalls affecting 14 million vehicles due to faulty cruise control deactivation switch. The latest recall involved some 4.5 million vehicles.

Dr. Gilbert is going to hang Toyota, he keeps claiming the failure of the system is Toyota specific and other manufactures system would not be allowed to fail like the Toyota is suspected too

He just took a different approach. Do you honestly think if Toyota say this issue then that they would have let it slide? Seeing things in a development view is different than use case.

Numerous time I have developed code that worked the way it should but months later there was an issue that arose. Thats life. Now I think its just a matter Toyota needs to make an update. we set up AV systems here at work. the code will be written to control everything from the touch panel. then in a year or so, for no reason whatsoever stuff stops working. when the programmer comes out apparently there was a bug. its weird since nobody changed it, how does it change? i dont trust stuff like that and i would much prefer a throttle cable.

Me too. Not to mention, if a throttle cable breaks, I know how to fix it. Computer breaks, I'm SOL.
