Anybody have an amatuer radio License? Seems like a good idea for those out of the way places where a cell phone just can't reach.
Took my Technician class test on Saturday. Haven't got my call sign yet.

Congrats, got my tech in February. Ideally I'd like to run a mobile setup in the taco, but for now I might just get a handheld.

I recently got my Tech Class license and will be uprading to a General Class license very soon here.

I had a Kenwood TM-708a that had been modified to transmit out of band in the Tacoma although recently took it out to make room for a new radio. Looking to put an Icom IC-2820 with DStar like what Seth is running pretty soon here. For the handheld I'm running a modified Yaesu FT-60R. I also have a Kenwood TM-271a which is bran new that I'm looking to get rid of if anyone is interested.

You know I was about to say, "It looks like Mike is the brain in the family" considering you had the lower letter, although that doesn't necessarily mean you passed with a higher grade lol. The Tech was pretty easy for me, but I have a mild electronics background and studied off and on for a few days prior to the test. What I was kind of bummed about is how I didn't realize you could take the tests consecutively. I was informed at the time of the test and decided to take the general after I passed the tech for no extra charge, but ended up failing by two questions.. I guess that isn't too bad considering I never studied for the general. Anyways congrats to the new ham, you should have fun. I have really enjoyed the quality of radio off road over the old CB. There really isn't any comparison.

Its usually fairly simple. My Yaesu ft-60r (handheld) took about ten minutes to mod but required removing a surface mount resister that was so small you could barely see it. The Kenwood TM-708a was also pretty easy. Its just one of those deals where you don't necessarily want to mess up a $500+ radio.

There are some really trick radios out there. If you want a mobile rig that will pretty much do it all, from HF to VHF and all the way up into UHF check out the yaesu FT-857D. It does it all, and has a removable face that you can place pretty much anywhere in the cab while keeping the brains underneath the seat or somewhere out of sight. Its a little pricey, but you sure wouldn't be needing another radio any time soon. A buddy of mine and I went on a camping trip a while back and put his 857D in my truck, ended up talking to people as far away as Australia from my TRUCK while driving down I-10. Mind you that the ionosphere propagation has a lot to do with how far out you can get, it was still pretty amazing none the less.

cool... i'm not real up on all the different bands... i know our fire/rescue stuff is in the 453.???? range but in another year or two think we are going to the 800.???? range... and if it were to work as a cb i think those freq. are down at like 26.???? right...
