I don't know if this has been covered or not, since it's lunch and I just jumped into this thread...

The only problem I have with the Confederate Flag as a symbol is that it represents an attitude of rebellion and action against the United States as a whole.

I'm a firm believer of being an AMERICAN first and foremost, and that shouldn't change whether you're African-American, Iranian-Amerian, Latin-American or Southern-American.

I also see it as the flag of an enemy of the United States -- quite possibly the greatest enemy this nation has ever faced. It was defeated and that enemy no longer exists, so I feel it should be retired, otherwise it is disrespectful.

No in some indian, Buddhist, and jainism the swastika is right facing (like german nazi)
Germany Nazi took the symbol and made it their sign, with no relevance to wht it actually means.
I lived in japan and the swastika is all over temples and traditional buddhist artifacts.

again, like said before with the confederate flag, It only took a couple uneducated R-tards to ruin the symbol and deeper meaning of the item.

When I was going to Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia they banned the dixie outfitters shirts because they had the Confederate Flag on them, and we had people coming from everywhere protesting that it was not racist, including non white people! Nevertheless you cannot change some peoples opinions.

If this is true then the same can be said about the founding fathers who left England. I am sure that England considered them to be traitors and anti government at the time. The confederate flag needs to be put in perspective and what it mean't at the time. I too am very much an American. I would fight and die for the freedoms we have in this country. However, I will not willingly put up with an oppressive, socialistic, anti religious government. If the time comes for history to repeat itself, then call me a rebel.

Bold = agreed. I am a northerner and I could care less what flag you fly. If you are patriotic about the country and proud about your heritage-That's your right.
What I'm saying is- Blaming "northerners" for "oppressing you" is bullshit. Because there are southerners would look at you funny for flying the stars and bars and northerners who fly it too....It goes both ways. My point was less about the topic and more about society and everyone looking to make everything about them vs someone else. There is no need to be a victim of some great conspiracy.

There is not "select" people who get bent outta shape about this flag...You'll find them in all walks of life.

And again- If you are proud of it- Show it anyways.

Except the United States fought for and won its independence. The Confederate States did not.

That's what's wrong with the Confederate flag. It's a sign of a quashed rebellion, not independence. And to me, if you fly one, you might as well burn the Stars and Stripes a spit on its ashes -- for it means you do not respect the blood, compromises and intelligence it took to keep this country together in what was probably its darkest years.

I laughed my ass off when I saw this shirt!!!!! :D:D:D

I take the shirt as making fun of all the Uber right wing racist arseholes who go around trying to be little Hitler Wannabe's, spouting rhetoric and hate (at least as well as their 8th grade education allows them to). I don't think it minimizes the gravity of the holocaust. Our best way of defeating these types is through public ridicule.

    Reminds me of this:

you can fly it for whatever reason you want. you can put up a christmas tree and tell me it has nothing to do with christmas.

    absolutely it symbolized racism.

The flag enjoyed a huge renaissance during the Civil Rights era. Angry, white Southerners brought it back to show they weren't going to take this whole desegregation thing lying down. They adopted it again as a symbol of hatred and defiance. They dusted it off to terrorize blacks who had the audacity to fight Jim Crow laws.

We all know that it what it symbolizes and represents to most people. You can tell me that the orgin of the swastica wasn't evil, however you fly one over your house now days, we both know what it means.

Then by this logic a crucifix is always a religious symbol, and you would support the removal of all crucifix's from public grounds as it is purely a religious symbol and has no secular purpose (IE the memorial in Mojave)? You would also support the removal of all references to Christmas from public buildings as the emblems and words can have no secular meaning, only a religious one?

True, but history always smiles upon the victors

Imagine if after the Bolshevik Revolution if households flew the Imperial Russian flag, what would happen to them?

Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but the colonies declared independence from England, the South declared secession from a Union they were already a part of, which is rebellion. Speaking in generalities, the colonies didn't government without representation, and the southern states, amongst other issues didn't want to do away with slavery...hmmm you tell me which is morally the better issue

The problem is that no one pays attention to other issues. And sadly all that is taught in schools is that it was a war over slavery which didnt even become an issue for Lincoln and the federalist until the last year of the war.

I am proud of my Southern heritage and my ancestors who fought for the confederacy. I have been confronted about flying the battle flag and try to explain that the flag has nothing to do with the color of a mans skin. The racists who march with the battle flag also carry the American flag and the christian flag but everyone always focuses on the confederate battle flag.

this is a picture of my Peterbilt when i used to be an over the road truck driver.

Many that fly the Condederate flag do so under the US flag. The blood flowed on both sides. Our founding fathers also understood tyrrany in government and is one of the reasons for our second ammendment. For all of the bad that the Confederate flag has been used for as of late, it does represent a spirit of Independence. Thank goodness the American Revolution was not a "quashed rebellion." Yes, I do respect the blood, compromises and intellegence it took to keep this country together, my own kinfolk's blood non withstanding. But I will never relent to an oppressive government who takes away my freedoms, even if this means I should be in a losing battle in a "quashed rebellion" and die. In this regard, and under the same battle flag my great, great grandfathers fought under, there is no question that the Confederate battle flag does represent a spirit of Independence for which this great country founded upon. This is the meaning the flag holds for me. Not racism, not evil, not disrespect for the American flag. Questionable organizations with bad intent will continue to use the flag for their own purposes. My guess is we are not going to agree and will have to agree to just disagree.

Its not racists and it would be stupid to think so however some people like to turn it in to that. I do think that a Rebel Flag's place in in a Museum or something of that nature since it is history and needs to be remembered. but as for it being "Flown"...I do not think this is actually right. were are a united states not a certain amount of states that seceded from the union. our flag is the American flag and that is the flag that should be flow. The Rebel flag was never a "State" it was used to represent an uprising against America's government and law and in the end America won. you can call it America against America but it was actually certain states against the Federal Government. It was a sad time in our nation and lessons can be learned from it which is why it should never be forgotten and that flag is a reminder of this. however it should be in a history or museum setting or even in ones home, but to fly a flag or have it displayed and flying on your home or vehicle is not right in my opinion. This nation has room for only one flag and that is the one that represents us all:)
