I read it was the power steering pulley. Maybe it's the crank pulley that's causing the PS belt to fail?

In any event, they said not one single accident has been reported as a result of the problem.

" the outer ring of the engine's crankshaft pulley may become misaligned with the inner ring, causing noise or a warning signal to light up....If the problem isn't corrected, the belt for the power steering pump may become detached from the pulley, making it suddenly more difficult to turn the steering wheel."

yeah, the article I was reading was significantly less descriptive. Also said less vehicles.

So how can we blow this out of proportion? Uhhhh, lets quit referring to it as 550,000 and start calling it half a million; because that sounds way cooler. And the steering becoming harder in a failure, lets rephrase that as TOTAL LOSS OF CONTROL!!!

That should do the trick. Let's get this witch hunt started!

Can't wait to see all the lawsuits from idiots who do not know how to drive a vehicle without power steering. Poor Toyota
