RPS1030's FToy Build/Trips

Instead of going crazy with the Taco, I found a complete ready to roll Formula Toyota buggy on the local craigslist. Looked at it a couple times and went for it. He even delivered it!

FToy Chassis #43 on a 84-84 Pickup frame
22r running on propane
Dual Transfer Cases with 4.7:1 gears in the rear case
4.10 gears, welded front, spooled rear
Trail Gear Rock Assault rear housing with disc brakes
High Steer
well used 38.5x14.5x15 TSL SXs on Allied steel beadlocks
Chromo shafts/birfields in the front end

Once it was it it's new home, I pulled the back seat out, ordered up some new 5-point harnesses, and started adding some tube. It felt open and 'scary' with no internal bracing. So an X-Brace went in behind the seats with some correctly located shoulder harness bars as well.

After getting it safe and comfy, cleanly ran thru emissions and transferred the title and tag. Yes, in the Wild West, this is a special construction ATV with On and Off Road Stickers on the small MC plate .

Dragged it up to Table Mesa just north of town for a quick shakedown run. Sorta flexed out on the rock pile and messed around on Lower Terminator. This is a FUN Rig! Next trip out was a night run on Raw Deal and Lower Terminator. Point and shoot at times, then unaware of where the hang up points at others, and weight distribution...ooooops, glad there wasn't any sheetmetal/glass.

Some more lighting upgrades with a RuffStuff taillight bar across the back.

Got out for another trip to Table Mesa and hit some different trails. The real challenge of the day was Collateral Damage. And unfortunately, the taillights were collateral damage when I didn't make the main waterfall.

It took winches from both rigs to reposition and finally roll it back upright. Chilled out for a few, winched up the fall, then continued on to run Anaconda and Predator.

Needed some touch up, and not thrilled with the red so it got a color change (90% done with a single coat ). And added some rock lights.

Been out to the east side of town for the last 2 night rides (no action shots).

Found somebody to bend up some tube. Moved the Propane tanks more upright and behind the seats. Then added some flooring for storage in the back. Also been buying up a storm (full hydro, 37" stickies/17" beadlocks, triple stick shifter).

Heading back up the Willow Springs Wash on the last trip and had a couple "issues". Got high centered on a large boulder with almost the entire front drive shaft resting on it. Managed to slowly/easily back off and continue on.

Then a bit later straddling a big hole when "BANG!!!" Took some looking to finally notice the front driveshaft not sitting correctly and the tcase front output was sheared. Got pulled back off the ledge and pulled the shaft pieces. Couple straps and a single winch to get back to the trailer.

Started to tear into things to get the final damage tally/upgrade needs. Gonna get the new stuff setup before any more runs also.

It is a fun little capable rig for getting crazy in. What you save in body panel crunchage; is traded for in mechanical parts

Transfer Case Front Output Sheared
Front Driveshaft Flange/Yoke Torn
Dual Case Adapter Splines Twisted (can't remove input gear from coupler shaft)
Front Ring Gear teeth chipped

I should pull apart the rear end to check it out as well, but it has probably had a different life from the front.

At least I know the front output and driveshaft were due to getting high centered on the shaft. Marlin 30 spline chromo shaft is ready to go in.

The dual case was 21 spline and I spend lotsa time (almost always) with the front case in low range. So I've got a new 23 spline 10° rotated adapter ready to go in.

And running factory 4.10s gives me several sets sitting around the garage/shed already. Just need to make the swap.

The front axle is completely disassembled to the bare housing. Slowly welding an upper truss and new full coverage pumpkin cover on lately. Mocked up a first try for the full hydro double ended steering ram, but went to low. Got a new tube bent up, gonna get the truss/cover finished before starting that again.

Mocking up the steering reservoir, led to cutting the hood bars off and getting a couple bends done. Still needs some grinding/cleaning before attacking. And it's much easier to reach engine stuff with them off currently.

Summer isn't really wheeling season here. Just night rides or super secret trails in the mountains. Hopefully I can find a good deal on a swamp cooler for the garage and keep plugging away.

Hmmmm, been hot and distracted elsewhere.

Bought a house and getting moved in/situated. So the buggy has a new spacious "bedroom". Complete with 12' walls, swamp cooler, and enough room to take this pic from inside.

RPS1030's FToy Build/Trips-imageuploadedbytapatalk1412882265.691636.jpg

Should have new upgraded breaker panels installed next week, then the work can get started again.

Decided that things need to be done right/redone. Dropped the buggy off with Colt who did the fuel tank mounts last summer.

Moving the drivetrain back 8". New t-case mount. Redo/undo leaf spring mount ugliness while slightly extending the wheelbase. Clean bolt in interior/floor. New PRP seats. Raise the chassis for more headroom.

Chassis cleaned up. Rockers are BEAT! Front end chopped off the chassis. Rear Axle cleaned up. New front springs delivered today.

Made some decisions on spring hanger location. Debated steering column setup. Couple more weeks at my buddies place hopefully.

Yeah there's some gorgeous land down here and countless number of off-road parks with 100,000 + acres of land and if you grew up and enjoy trail riding then it's hard to leave it. It looks like you're still doing the same type of wheeling though
