In an effort to smooth the lumpy idle, I removed the EGR system. It smoothed the idle some, but it's still not as steady as it ought to be so I'll remove and clean the intake tract next, then come up with some sort of PCV catch can to keep all of the oil out of the intake.

Grungy like Nirvana in the '90's.

Exhaust side. Found the quarter in the truck, so technically free mod.

I was hoping .50 BMG would fit, but went with 12 gauge on the intake side instead.

Made a catch can out of a spare air compressor water separator I had. We'll see how it works. The old hose was split, that must have been where the vacuum leak was as it idles much better now.

Went out farting around in the woods today. The snow was mushy, so it was fun.

Speedometer correction doohickey and new window switch panel came in today. I'll install this weekend, and I might delete the smog pump jungle too.

Jealous of your rig, old school tough. I've owned Tacos and 4Runners, but never had a LC. Good luck with any future mods.

Thanks man. I like 4runners too, this was my last one. '87, IFS, but it took me all over the west. People complain about the lack of power in the FJ80's. They have never owned a 22R 4runner on meats before. :D

Thanks. Putting in new o2 sensors tomorrow. I don't think they are bad, just want to start replacing wear items little by little.

O2 sensors took a little longer than expected. The nuts were rounded off and with the little heat shield in place you couldn't fit vice grips in there. I would estimate 8 man hours into swapping those bastards out. I kept getting intermittent faults for both a too rich and too lean condition. How can that be? Bad oxygen sniffers that's how. It runs like a Swiss watch now.

Yeah, and the FJ80 has the old school style o2 sensors held on with two studs instead of the new style screw in sensor (yours will be much easier!). This sort of thing is to be expected when wrenching on a 25 year old rig. I was to the point I considered cutting that section of the exhaust out and just welding in new bungs. It would have been faster.

Attempted to get into Olive Lake, but chickened out after the snow started getting mushy a few miles further up the road from the pic. Snow wheelin' alone is a bad idea, even for a professional hillbilly such as myself.

Spending one night cold and wet in the cab is enough to learn that lesson. I'm better prepared for self recovery now of course, but that doesn't mean it's fun!

I have personally had bad experiences with winches in all conditions. The only one I've ever had that functioned as intended was a PTO driven winch on a Military 6x6, until the cable broke. Maybe the newer Warn's are better than the old ones, but it seems like they never work when you need them most, or there is no anchor available, etc. My come a long and hi-lift always seem to get me home. For snow recovery, especially this time of year, getting on top of the snow and out of the hole the tires dug is the key. Sometimes it is better to wait until the wee hours when the snow freezes up again to get moving...

Ya it seems like the pull-pal would not work well in the snow. Maybe better to bury a log as a deadman for an anchor.
