okay in the 4 cyl you have the automatic transmisson. a buddy of mine said you can manually shift through the gears like 1 to 2 to 3 and to 4 but cant that really screw up ur tranny

Nope. I shift mine manually all the time when driveing thru hills or off roading.

You can "cowboy" the gears but you have to use good judgement with RPM's. Dont redline, dont wind up the RPM's real high then drop the gas in the same gear, dont downshift too soon...stuff like that. Just dont be abusive.

Do you have the "ECT" button on the dash in that '08? Anyway if youre racing a corolla just leave it in drive. Youll do fine

as to the original question, you probably won't damage it immediately, but if you make a habit of it, expect your engine and transmission to wear out quicker. Consistently operating at higher RPMs is pointless. If you have too much gas, feel free to send some to me.
