New Style TRD CAI

Just ordered one. I'm kinda worried now after reading some negative feedback. Has anyone installed this without having any problems follow? I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks.

are the problems your talking about the making lean of the engine? If so you will actually see a power gain in a naturally aspirated truck. The forced injection ones are the only ones that have anything to worry about or so Ive heard.

I looked into one of those, the dealership wanted to charge me $475.00 for it though...F*#! that.
I've never heard of anyone having any problems from the intake though

I think the new intake causes problems like the Volant intake and the gains are less than the old style.

I've only met one person who ran into problems with his MAF sensor after running an intake and that was because he never cleaned it. But I'm not exactly and expert on the matter.

I have run one now for quite a while and have gone through a period of P0101 codes. Took a bit to figure out the problem. Please note that all the following is purely empirical evidence.

Once the intake was seen as the originator of the code then (with Scangage) it was easy to isolate the particular event causing the code. This is an '09 TRD, 40k.

These trucks computer will, to a point, "learn" from your driving habits and sort of fine tune themselves. The operative term here is "to a point"; the cai allows a much greater volume flow rate of air thru the intake, it is not linear, the higher the RPM the greater the increase in VFR beyond the previous sample. My experience is that accelerating wide open to 3500 or beyond for a period of time or several times in succession, pushes the MAF beyond its capability and confuses the computer, generating a P0101 code; after resetting it and driving a bit more conservativly, no problem.

The P0101 code is a problem in itself as it disables the stab. control system until reset. Also, note that higher RPM ranges do not, of themselves, seem to be the problem, but it is more a case of how often and how rapidly you get there. So, I have not seen my self limited in goosing it as much as i need to jump onto the interstate.

All this being said, I like the intake as it sounds nice, actually has improved my MPG a bit in hiway cruise (certainly not in town stop and go, nothing works there) and the higher rpm pick up is noticeably improved.

I've got one. It seems fine except for the fact that it doesn't stay closed! The way that it clips shut is something that can be improved. Two clips and two "tabs" as I call them. The tabs are closest to the passenger side. I've taken it to the dealer and pop the hood and show them that it isn't shut, they snap it back down and tell me to see if it happens again and THEN bring it in for warranty. I believe that the side to side movement of the engine upon start up or on hard shifts or rough terrain the top of the intake shakes itself loose.

Maybe I just have a defective one, I have been told by the dealer's parts manager that he has installed lots of these intakes with no issues. Maybe its just mine or maybe no one looks under their hood until the mechanic goes to do some regular maintenance and just closes it again.

Sorry for the rambling, I am just worried that by not being completely shut, my MAF might get screwed up. I have had to deal with MAF issues on other vehicles before and they are a pain in the butt.

As far as performance, I cannot tell the different in power, and can't tell of much noise difference. Down shifting to pass or go up a hill gets louder, but not by much.

Mine closes nice and tight. Call up your Toyota stealership and complain.

Plan B

I ended up canceling the order and doing the SAF removal + drop in AFE mod. It's a hell of a lot cheaper and I figure it'll do me just as good. Thanks for the help anyway.

I installed mine about a week ago and have not experienced any problems. I like the sound even if there is only a very small increase in HP. I have read about the problem of the air/fuel mixture tending toward too lean. If this is so, I would like to know who determined that and by what means it was determined rather just going with hear say.
