Cold Air Intake

Hey I'm looking at buying a cold air intake to put on my 07 Tacoma (V6). Anybody have any advice? I was looking at either the Volant or the AFE.

Is it really different than those made by K&N and the rest???? Or is it something that TRD wants to make some money with???. I would like to buy one but I don't want to spend money on something that I will throw away after one week. It does make me worry less if I have any problem with my warranty, because is made by Toyota, but I still don't want to spend any money if does not make a difference. Thank you for any suggestion.

I ended up going with the AIRAID cool air intake. I am happy with it so far. I have noticed a little more throttle response and a more aggresive sound from the engine. Although the AIRAID does not have a fully enclosed air box, it does have a cold air dam that helps keep the cool intake air away from the hot engine compartment air. The reason I went with the AIRAID is because it was easier on the bank account. Very easy to install aswell.

Thank you man. You have a good point here. Money. But I am more worry about the Dealer answer if ever I have any warranty issue. I have an extented warranty wich I plan to keep it. I plan to put 200k on this truck. Did you have to do any tuning or straight bolt on???? I looked on theirs site and they dont specify anything

It was a straight bolt on. I made sure to keep all of my stock air intake and hardware that goes with it. As far as the warranty issue goes, I am not sure. I dont think there is any warranty issues with aftermarket air intakes. But if you have your stock one, you can always throw it back on if you need it.

If you are concerned about an aftermarket Intake voiding your warranty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please read the Magnuson-Moss act US Code Title 15 Chapter 50

Low end tourque

I kow a lot of 4 cyl. eng experience a drop in hp & tq with a CAI. The reason is that after market CAI don't have a resonator like the factory setup. However I'm not sure with the V6.

but usualy your top end gains will out weigh the small loss. I also prefer the increased throttle responce.

We are two diferent persons. What are you considering -top end-????. 2000 rpm and up, 3000rpm and up ???. It is very rarely that i have to pass over 3000 rpm. Most of the time will stay around 2000- 2500

I'm confused. What do you mean two diferent people?

Top end, meaning more like 4500 to redline.

And bottom end loss is usualy only 3-5 hp in the 2200 to 3000 rpm range with over all gains from 8-12 hp

Now this is more of a general statement, were as most of my experience is in 4cyl engen department, and I havent seen any tests run on our trucks.

Another thing to concider is fuel mapping after you've free'd up the air flow of your engine. By having your a/f ratios and ignition timing adjusted, you'll be able to acheve maximum efficency from your up-grades.

Hope I cleared that up.

I totally agree about have the fuel injection re-mapped after increasing the intake/exhaust flow for optimum performance, but how does one go about doing this for a taco? I'm accustomed to having motorcycles remapped and dyno-tuned (usually with a piggyback fuel injection module). Does anyone have any experience with putting a truck on a dyno and remapping the fi?

There are different ways to for tuning your fuel delivery, but all work in one of several ways. Increase fuel preasure, increase injector size, mod the signal to the injector or addind injectors.

You can increase fuel preaser with a raising-rate fuel preassure reg. Modifying the signal requiers a magical box (expensive)

Programable ECU allow you to adj you A/F throughout the rpm range.

Oxygen sensors tell you the A/F ratio.
there are two types; narrow and wideband. you want the wide band for accurate tunes. looking at $200

rising rate fuel press reg. is for boosted appl. does nothing under normal manifold vaccum.

injector signal modifiers/generators
ECUs, AFCs, piggybacks, reflashes all controle the amount of fuel delivered to the engine. They tipickley have they're own display or hook up to a laptop to allow the user to addjust the fuel according to the wideband sensor, in order to hit their target AFR in all the different zones of the fuel map. Expensive ones communicate with the sensor and self tune while you drive. Nice!

Added injector
You can only add fuel and are controled by a seperate computer

MAP/MAF sensor
The signal tells you the engine load.

My best addvice would be to get with someone that has experience in the area to help you out. Spark tuning is not as striaghtforward as tuning the fuel with a sensor. You need a chassis-loading dyno, ideally.

One of the problems with this, cost. renting a dyno is $,$$$.

ATN. DIBSEN_ Two diferent people= You may be a young men that likes to spin the weels faster then I = a middle age guy. There for you may spend more time close to the red line then I.Thats all. Yes I wiil consider some remaping once URD comes up with something thats worth the money. I finally got my TRD CAI and installed tuesday night in about 1 hour. Instructions are excelent and every thing fits perfectely. I took the truck for a test drive before and after instalation . on the same road and at aproximately the same speed. My impresion is that = I feel that likes to speen faster then before, more eager towards that red line ,once you pass 2000 rpm. It is definitevely noisier when you push the gas , but once you settle at cruising speed you won't see a diference from stock.I don't feel any torque lost at low RPM .With a automatic the 6 cyl will log at 11-1200rpm/ 30-35 mph the same way as before the modification.Again this engine have a lot of torque. If I lost something I will probably not feel it. CONCLUSION??? My friend that have an 07 FJ CRUISER ask me if is worth the money????. At this point it is done and the time will prove it to me. But I sugested to him for now to invest his hard earned money in something else or wait for a street legal Supercharger then buy the CAI.
