    what exactly is a deckplate originally used for and where can you get them?

    The Deckplate mod basically allows you to open a big hole in the "pre-filtered" side of your intake box. This allows less restricted air to go through the filter and into the engine. The idea - the more air you get, the better combustion you get (and more performance).

    The deckplate part comes in when you want to close the hole anytime you might have something that could put excessive dirt or water into the intake box (Example: it is raining, or you are going through mud, or there is snow/slush on the road).

    You can get a deckplate at most local marine/boating hardware stores or online through someone like West Marine. Here is a picture of one from West Marine:

    Don't do this on an 05+ Tacoma. I tried it and all it did was raise the temp of my intake air, because it was sucking air above the manifold. Hot air is not good. Leave your intake stock, or get a URD intake if you want to suck in cool air. Check my CarDomain for pics of the URD intake.

    Ok, what about on the 2.7L's? Does it have any advantage there?

    I called URD about a cold air intake for my truck. They said that they do not have one as of yet, but that doesn't mean that they won't in the future. I really don't care much for K&N, and I haven't found anyone locally that carries the AirRaid system for the 2.7L so I can take a look at it.

    Back on subject, I would think that with the extra airflow (and space) around the 2.7L, that the intake air wouldn't be too much hotter, and some performance boost would ensue. What do you think?

    Another note on this - the Intake Line seems to be where the most restriction is (that is from the filter to the engine).

    I removed the secondary filter on mine (see my signature), but I don't think that I am going to go cutting a hole in the box. That is unless there is going to be an advantage to it.

    Ok, I did this on the 4Runner and it cost less than $30 and 1 1/2 hours of my time. What I noticed, 2MPG increase and one hell of a growl when you get on it

    2.7L 3RZ,K&N filter, 4" deck plate mod,flowmaster 40 series,3" suspension lift, hybrid 52"chevy/toyota rear springs.
    i swear by the deck plate on 1st gens....have heard people hate them on the new trucks... also with the 2.7L go with a 3.5 " deckplate not a 4" the air box is alittle smaller and the 3.5 will flow fine

    I ordered a 4" deckplate the other day. It will be my 1st mod. It's the only one I can afford right now.

    Who ever is preaching cold air rocks knows nothing about combustion. It is true making the gas cold will put more in the cylinder than warm gas. But what explodes more hot or cold gas.

    To exemplify this try this little experiment. On a hot day put some gas into a spray bottle. Go out side and spray a smal mist. STAND BACK and throw a match into it. Big WOOOSH!

    Now do this on a cold day or in a walk in freezer, where you can STAND BACK. Little woosh if it even lights.

    Same goes for in the cylinder. Hot air, hot gas; more woosh, more power; cold air more gas, little woosh.

    I hate bad science quotes. It is true in the 50' & 60's they had keg koolers on gas supply's for dragsters. And that was to get more gas in the cylinder. That stopped in the 70's though when some geek|that went gear head, took a seond to think it all the way thru and went hot with air and gas!

    More importantly more air is what really beneficial in this sitution

    The motor setups that actually REALLY benefit from cold air are of course using forced induction

    but........the deckplate on the 3.4 has been dyno'd at 5 hp/8 ft pl. of tg......so its definitely a good deal.

    You guys keep talking about this deckplpate mod. I was hoping someone would actually think about what I said instead of the thread. So let me be a little graphic. Take the hose off and the box out. Put some screen door over the hole to keep the leaves out. It's an easier mod and ur trowing hot air in there and getting more power.

    Muchless making space for things like another Optima or an hpa.

    32x12x17, gas heater, my air intake mod, k&N air filter, magellian gps, flex-a-lite, gibson cat back exhaust, bed mat, air horns, aoga horn, pioneeed 6 cd/dvd player, wet oakley seat covers, trd, dual cab, long bed, leer rising fbrglss cap, 4.6L, sport pkg, extra led back-up lights under bed, red led running lights under doors, red fender 2 fender, kc fogs on bull bar. Oh and a backup camera, alum billet grill replacement, hood bug deflector, window wind deflectors...

    32 miles each way to work at 75 mph each way with leer 19 mpg
    75 mph each way no leer 21 mpg
    60 mph each way with leer 21 mpg
    60 mph each way no leer 23 mpg and up
