Coolant overflow problems after 50K miles of Supercharger Being installed

as of today truck is all done here are some pics of the process. the only thing not factory is the arp headstuds i installed in the block. truck runs great.... i had the cylinder heads resurfaced and pressure tested. everything checked out ok..... glad truck is going again



I have a 2005 tacoma 2wd 4 door auto. Ok my truck has 105k miles on it and its been supercharged for about 50k miles. It is the TRD kit. I have had not problems at all with the supercharger. About 30k miles ago i noticed a slight coolant smell. I popped the hood and found that coolant had come out of the overflow and if you have seen how it is designed when it overflows the fan hits it then it goes everywere. Not the greatest design. At this point i had not seen the tempature rise above the normal level at all. I didnt think much of it and just cleaned the mess up. Didnt have another problem for awhile. I made a trip out the the river and found that when i was headed there the same thing happened. The truck was really being worked i had my stand up jetski in the bed and towing a boat. Pretty much constantly in boost with the ac on. Anyways i took it easy the rest of the trip and found that on the way home the temp did rise above normal levels but when i would stay out of boost the temp would stay at normal levels but would still make the coolant overflow. When i got home i replaced waterpump, thermostat and radiator cap and obiously all the seals and replaced coolant. it seems ok now... has anyone had a similar problem. Not really sure if the problem is fixed because of the fact that i really havent driven it in the same conditions.

 

Were there any signs of coolant leaks on the block from the waterpump or thermostat housing?

 

I suspect a head gasket leak. You need a leakdown test to rule it out. Boost is pushing exhaust into the coolant. You can also test the coolant for combustion products. That will also point to a blown gasket. The leakdown test is more precise to it's location.
Don't run it till you find the cause. Burning coolant leads to engine seizure.

 

No there were no signs of leakage the water pump bearing was gritty so i replaced that and the thermostat i just did cause everything was apart. I have already tested the coolant for exhaust gases and found nothing i used the smog machine at work. this is very accurate way to check for this. also leakdown test is good leakage is way with spec

 

Install an aux temp gauge.
There's only so many things that can make it overflow. Trans cooler leak, engine oil leak in head to coolant, overtemp, improper coolant mix(boil over), exhaust leak(ruled out). Most of those will be obvious.
Use a refractory specific gravity tester for your exact mix. The floating ones are crap.

 

ok so after further testing and using the smog machine again(wasnt calibrated correctly) now everything is working properly there are very high counts of hydrocarbons in the coolant when the truck is running. There is exhaust being pushed into the coolant. I will be removing the cylinder heads in the next week and sending to a machine shop to check for cracks. if there are no cracks ill be replacing headgaskets and installing arp headstuds. does anyone have the part numbers for the apr headstuds for the 4.0 engine.

Make sure you get a gasket made for higher compression, or you'll be in the same boat.

 

i use to build turbo hondas this happens wen u start to get a small leak in the headgasket

 

This is depressing, sorry man. Kind of makes me think twice about getting that SC down the road at some point

 

I am upset this happened because things like this happen when you modify things. I will be pulling the heads off next weekend. i am trying to source arp headstuds for the reinstallation of the heads to help prevent this from happening again. I will keep updated ill throw some pics on when i get it torn down

The job obiously is a involved repair but it helps that i deal with dual overhead cam cylinder heads at work. I work as a tech at a local mercedes dealer and doing cylinder head replacements is part of the daily work that comes along. I will post pics of the progress. Plan is tear down next saturday then send heads out to be checked for cracks and then install the next weekend.

 

Well its great that you have the ability to fix this yourself in a very timely manner, most can not say this. Tearing down an engine this new would make me nervous!

 

the heads are off the truck definitly more involved than i thought due to the fact that the front cover of the engine has to come off to take the heads off either way it is torn apart and heads are going to the machine shop tomorrow to check for cracks....

ok so i am going to try to load some pics right now..... I pulled the motor apart and sent the heads out. today i decided that pulling the motor would be best to allow the assembly of the motor alittle easier.... im working on loading pics right now

 

well i took the pics with my phone and have no idea how to get them on here when i try and load them to web hosting page it says invalid file type.... anyways i got the heads back from the machine shop today and they were not cracked so that is good and i recieve the gaskets tomorrow.... the arp headstuds came in so i think tomorrow i will start the assembly of the motor. ill try and figure this picture thing out....
