Homer,

Do you have actual before and after mileage numbers calculated as of yet? I am always looking for that elusive extra MPG?

Thanks

Talking Took off Secondary Air Filter

I have a 2.7 automatic that I use for city driving and uphill driving to work. I took off the secondary air filter two weeks ago and I definitely noticed a difference in acceleration when hitting 3k rpm. As far as mpg is concerned I have to wait and see how it affects this. My daily drive to work is 20 miles of bumper to bumper freeway traffic going from sea level up to almost 2000 ft, so I use a lot of gas. Even so, I get about 20-21 mpg on my truck. I live in CA, but I kept the secondary filter so I can stick it back on when I take it in for service.

Yes i was getting about 16 mpg when I first got my X-Runner last September. I removed the filter this spring and my mileage went up to about 17.5-18.5 mpg. I am not sure if it is the removal of the second filter or the fact the motor is now broken in. Although I did the same thing to my 05 D-Cab Pre-runner (before I traded it in) and the mileage did seem to up on that to. If I was you I would yank that puppy out. If you need help let me know I am in south jersey too.

But what about the 4.0 L

I have read everybodies comment on the secondary filter, but I am wondering if the 4.0 could have similar results? If anybody has any results or info, it would be much appreciated. Thanx

So out came the secondary air filter this morning, and Sunday afternoon we leave on a camping trip so I'll be interested to see if the MPG changes at all with the trailer in tow.

For those interested my starting MPG is 20.76 running solo (all highway), and 11.00 MPG towing (mix of mostly highway and stop and go).

After I put a couple of tanks through with the filter removed I'll post another update with new mileage numbers.

Thanks again to 007tacoma for bringing this to my attention, and to HomerJ for convincing me that it would be worth the effort in the 4.0 also.

After the removal of the air filter do you keep the
4) 6" x 6" piece of Aluminum Foil on that tunnel?

Nope, The foil is just to prevent anything from getting into the engine while you are inside drilling out the filter. It is just a safety measure against blowing leaves, insects, kids in the neighborhood with a fist full of sand, etc.

Remove the foil just before you re-install the airbox.

Yeah, my boss is still out of town, so no vacation for me for a while.

I don't have to be into work until 7:30ish, but I like avoiding the traffic and getting work done without people coming to me with problems. ...then there is always leaving work at 3PM!!!

I am also on-call 24/7, so I never really stop working - I just incorporate the rest of my life into work.
