whelp, i just caught wind of this mod and did it in the dark, by flashlight.
just did the old pry and break- it out, with the under filter covered so no plastic bits flew in there.
all plastic was accounted for. guess if i REALLY need this thing in i'll buy one off of you that did it properly.
i'm already seeing a big difference from my AFE drop in, so i wonder if there will be any more diff.
heck the AFE scares me because it looks so...OPEN....good god, a i think a cricket could crawl through there...but if you guys swear by them...

Just removed my secondary filter and installed a "Green Filter"

I just removed the secondary filter and installed a "Green Filter" then took the truck for a a test drive.
Seems to have a much better sound now and more snap!!! I wiill be checking fuel milage and will report back. Before MOD with 1200 miles on the truck (2008 V6 Double Cab with 33" tires) I was getting 17.5 MPG. About 300 miles before the gas light came on.

The Green Filter has a little more Air Flow than a K&N. http://www.greenfilterusa.com/

Well after reading these threads i decided to go ahead and take the sucker out. I just pried it out no problem. I wasn't really expecting to feel a difference but it actually does seem to be more responsive! And i dont know if its just me or that maybe i never let my truck run long enough, but the ticking that i used to hear when it was idling seems to have disappeared but i can't see how that would make a difference...

It just seems like when i step on the gas hard it responds quicker than before. But maybe its just me... I say go ahead and take it out, i cant see it being a problem. My brother and my dad both have toyotas vehicles and they only have one filter.

literally just finished doing it. it took me mr. non mechanically inclined about a minute total, which is a new record. All pieces are accounted for, so away we go. I will let you know if there are any significant gains/losses.

After reading this thread

I took mine out yesterday. No point in drilling out the plastic rivets. I just used a flathead screw driver & a hammer. I knocked the heads off & the filter came out. There were 6 rivets.

I drove 80 miles today. I could tell quite a bit of difference. Running at 60, the rpms are about 300-400 lower than before. It seems like my truck has more power. It will get up & go much better. I have 92,000 miles on my 05 DC Tacoma v6. I even was carrying about 200lbs of extra weight in the bed. I can't wait to see what this does for my 80 mile RT daily commute. I was averaging 20MPG before this mod. I will post in a week or two my mpg.

Sean

i'm not sure if the secondary removal helped as i put in my drop in the same day...so i have nothing to judge against.
the AFE sure seemed to change things, it does respond faster and smoother. my foot is not depressed as hard on the gas as it was before, 60 and 70 runs a hell of alot softer and quieter than it did (which is odd because many report a richer sound with it) to cruise at fifty i barely have to touch the gas, whereas before 50 felt like i was trying to race someone.

i went on a 6 hour trip (3 hrs both ways)) it ran smooth and afterwards i've noticed i've had fill up less.

secondary filter, not sure. but if all it's for is for keeping emissions from leaving the engine while restricting airflow a pinch, i say yank it out.

I just bought my Tacoma, should i wait until the warrenty is out to take out the secondary filter, or should i do it now?

Also, on a side note, does everyone fall in unison with the AFE Pro-Dry S Air Filter, in stead of a K&N AirCharger (pt# 63-9025) (I will mostly be going in the 1500-2500 RPM range)? How mush are the APE filters for a 2-nd generation Tacoma anyways?

Took mine out over the weekend and it made a big difference. Lowered the RPM's on the road, more power, quicker response.

Letting the engine breath doesn't change the gear ratio. It can't lower your RPMs with a manual tranny. It did give me better throttle response and my MPG's went up.
