Open headers?

Sounds badass. Kinda wanna do it to my truck. Any good or bad reason not to?

Dont know much bout engine so I figured id ask.

 

Do you mean no piping after the header cone collector. If thats the case, bad idea. Yeah sounds sweet, but definately way too loud for daily driver. My set up sounds exactly like that, but with a deeper tone, due to piping and muffler etc.

Oh yeah, dont forget:

1) emissions test (Fail OBD II) even with O2 simulator installed they will know you have no cats or muffler.. Some states, Cops can pull you over.
2) lost of low end HP and Tourqe
3) loud cabin noise due to exh leaving out near the front axle.

I could keep going. Just would not do it...

Just heads up, love the exhaust note this set up produces. Just hate the leak issues with the headers.

Waiting on some more info, but if not resolved, will purchase DT Longtube headers late Jan. That will not be emissions legal, & will be more aggressive, but will not be as abnoxious as that vid was.

 

haha i have the flowmaster 40 series right now and love the sound and i heard that JBA have been having some problems with their headers and i can't do the longtube here in cali and don't want to get pulled over for it so i am not sure what i want to do yet.

 

roxspin if u can get some gaskets from jba since there ALOT different from the stock ones.... its like fury, its weird, did u check ur welding between the header and the cat?

 

JC Whitney sells an "exhaust diverter", short piece of pipe you put after your cat and before the muffler. Has a flap valve in it that sends the exhaust out the side of the valve or through the muffler side. Controlled with a cable run into the cab. You could probably but it ahead of the cat too but then you'd have the O2 sensor issue. Selectable best of both worlds.

 

Ha Ha ha... I saw that on the news today. Whats next bring back the sparkplug and fire out the exhaust trick LOL...

Correction on DT's. You leave the front sensors on, They read the fuel trims and more coming out your motor. The second set read whats coming out after the first set of cats.

Being that cats are removed, the DT's come with only/one bung on them rather than two like your stock manifold does; which os one before and one after the cats.

Now, being that your rear sensors are not being used, the CEL comes on. Thats why you purchase an O2 simulator, in order to trick the ECU into thinking that your rear sensors are connected and getting proper readings.

All the rear sensors do is tell the ECU that the front cats are functioning properly. The front sensors are the ones that your ECU depends on to monitor your A/F ratio, fuel trims and all

This is why Y-pipes are an easy install, No sensors, so no effects on the ECU.

And lastly, even without the O2 simulator installed, your ECU and engine will run normal with the DT's. But you will not pass an emissions test, plus you have that ugly CEL glarring in the panel...

So in a more simpler way to put it: Front O2 sensors must stay in tact and functioning in order to run you motor properly.

Yeah I am thinking that same thing. Weld at the Cats are good. Even reinforced. I had the JBA gaskets. When I tried to order them again they were on back order. I needed my truck running so I sold out and got the stock ones from the stealership.

Lots of regrets here, but will be pissed if I spend another $30-$40 for another set of gaskets, and no change.

These Headers look warped. The portion between the front top two studs on the passenger side is not flushed against the motor. Plus there is black sut right in that spot. Did the stethescope test and sure enough.

Dont know dude, you think the gasket will make that much a diff.Getting help from SILVER06TRD, who is having similar issues with leaks and gaskets but with DT's.

Damn, how hard is it to produce a bullet proof header. Does the domestic world have these issues w/known reputible products like say Eldebrock.

But hey, truck still sound bad ass.. espeacially above 3000rpm

 

Depends on your state and how thorough they check. Im in NC, and all they did was plug into my OBD II port. Check codes, and I was good to hook... They did not even check Tint. I was lucky.

But if you get lucky like me, with the O2 sim hooked up, you will not throw any codes, and have a chance to pass emissions OBD test.

Yup, JBA Shortys. Just make sure you can weld or find a good welder for the Cats. And when installing, use all the correct gaskets.

I say from experience= JBA for Header flange, and OEM for y-pipe crush gaskets. Dont reuse any of these must replace. Probably cost another $60 or so and well worth it.
