Who knows about the performance chips? Are they worth it?

I currently have a cold air intake and flow master exhaust but still want a little more power and MPG's out of my 2006 V6 taco. Does any one out there have a performance chip on? Does it help along with the other mods? Im currently getting at best 19 mpg hwy.

 

Save your money, there aren't any chips that will help you out. Also, depending on the type of cold air intake you have, you might have actually lost power. The OEM intake is a cold air intake and very few of the aftermarket ones do anything except make the truck louder.

 

that is a very debatable topic i personally have never seen any major improvements in gas trucks by adding a chip. usually its approx 1 mpg increase at best and maybe 10 hp and torque increase at high rmp's. id say not worth it just buy a supercharger and go big or go home !! they are way more worth the money. just my two cents

I disagree with you pugga. The stock air intake is garbage. I feel a definite increase in power with my intake.

Your not going to get mpg increase along with torque and horsepower, its usually torque and horsepower only or mpg only or a very small increase in all three. There arent may mpg increases that are noticeable, its usually just very small increases. The pay off isnt usually worth it for mpg, just keep your foot out of it and run fully synthetic oil.

 

that also can be an argued, may people say that the way the truck comes is the best mpg you can get even with the stock air filter. On the 4 cylinder models there is a secondary filter that, when removed shows mpg improvements. You can remove the filter on the 6 cylinder also but it doesnt show as good of results

 

thanks for the info black taco. I don't think I need the supercharger although I would like it, its just to much to spend for me right now. I do drive it pretty easy but still am not impressed with the mpg. I think toyota could have done a better job designing their motor but on the other hand it does have plenty of power right off the lot.

 

no problem man there is tons of info here at TW that can explain almost all questions that you might have. the supercharger is def a huge chunk of money i havent been able to pull the trigger on one yet either but im pretty happy with the power i have for now. i average 17.9 on a typical week and im running a 6 inch lift with 33's

OP: You have a 2006... how many miles? Have you always had lousy MPGs or have they declined over time? Have you serviced the MAF, throttle body, air filter, catalytic converter, 02 sensor, plugs, etc lately? Cleaning the gunk out of these things if they haven't been serviced in a while can increase your mpg significantly.

 

You can remove all filters and restrictions, and be lucky to gain 1 hp with the stock engine. A CAI will benefit Tacos with the TRD supercharger, however.

 

But just listen to it, it's gotta be making more power...

These CAI's only draw in warmer air when the vehicle is not moving, and so does stock. When you're rolling 30+ mph the CAI will draw in the same temp air as stock. As for performance gains, I don't have a dyno and won't put my truck on one after watching U tube vids of dynos gone bad. Between how much a CAI cost and whatever gains there actually is, I think the cost may out weigh the gains.
As for the OP, if ya want better mileage and better performance, do as previously said and clean your MAF, and TB. Run some FI cleaner in your gas tank, Do the sea foam in your engine, check your spark plugs, and so on. Basically do maintinence that a regular person wouldn't normally do. There are other things that cause drag on your truck, like the power steering. When's the last time you bled your PS? Should, in actuality be done evry 45k-60k miles. There are so many preventative maintinences that get over looked that affect performance and gas mileage. If you want a super increase, save your $ for that super charger.

You must get on here just to try to make yourself sound smart and important. Keep running that cluttered mess toyota put on your intake if that's what makes you happy.
