Alaska has just removed all the IM emissions testing for the state, so I no longer have an IM to pass, anything I can do to get more power that I couldn't before? Help me out guys. What can I remove or add? I've heard there's no benefit to removing the cat, but I sort of want to do it anyways just because I can now, haha. I know I know, i probably won't. What are your guys' thoughts?

What was Alaska's reasoning on this?

haha, let me see what I can dig up, I know that there was not enough cars/trucks failing the emissions test to justify keeping it open was a big part of it.

None of the emissions components really restrict power. The engine produces most power when running efficiently, and the emissions stuff on it, ensure thats the case.

You can run cat-less if you get some rear O2 sims, headers (probably okay before) or straight pipe it, or whatever the hell else! :D

But you do need some back pressure to have a good running truck and I have no clue about the specifics about that...

And if you do remove any cats please recycle them (you get ~50 bucks each iirc)

Just because you don't have to pass emissions it is till against federal law to remove or tamper with your emission equipment. You may never get caught but do you want to risk putting your self in that liability. If you try to trade it in or something the dealer might not take accept it or drastically lower the trade in value or make you replace it before they will accept it.

Get ready for way higher registration prices now. As soon as they dropped the IM testing they jacked up registration prices. :/

 ANY back pressure on ANY vehicle is a bad thing. There isnt any "back pressure" on a stock vehicle, unless someone shoved a potatoe into the exhaust.

Okay yes, BUT I think you know what I mean, hence why unbolting the exhaust manifold for "better flow" ends up not working...

Haha, Chris you've had a lot of head slaps in the past few days on this very topic. I did not bring back pressure into this. I know nothing of it. :)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

    It's not 1975 any more.

In 1975, auto makers needed to comply with new stricter regulations, so they added some bolt on filtering to their 1974 models. Not surprisingly, there was less power.

So you could increase power by removing some factory parts and kind of retroactively turning your car into a 1974 model.

Now, that was 30 years ago, and automotive engineers have been working with emissions controls laws as a design constraint since before most of them came out of college.

So modern cars are designed to optimize across a set of criteria that includes

    *COST

    *POWER

    *ECONOMY

    *EMISSIONS LAWS

The entire design from end to end is working with that in mind.

So, how do you make your car more powerful than it came from the factory?

Well, one way would be to go down to your local performance shop, where they've got a dynamometer, a machine shop, and a handful of dudes who know their shit, and you say to them: "Here's $20,000. Build up my ride. Make it run fast. It doesn't need to pass any emissions tests when you're done."

You'll probably come out with a stoked engine, low restriction inputs and outputs, a blower, a requirement to run premium gas, and custom electronics tuned to the new configuration.

But if you just get out your toolbox and start randomly unbolting shit, like you would have in 1975, it's more than a coin toss you're gonna end up hurting performance more than helping it.
