the smaller pulleys spin the supercharger faster to create more boost there by giving you more power

no you are wrong it does not reduce reliability. it reduces the longevity of the motor but my truck is just as reliable as when i bought it new from toyota in 2009. besides its not a cobbled together e-bay turbo kit, it was designed and thought out by toyota meaning it will be reliable. i still do the same amount of maintenance as i did when i was na. like the saying goes cheap, fast, reliable pick two.

the pulley alone will give you about 2 psi additional boost. You will get a nice little gain for the money.

Technically it would void the warranty and TRD has been putting tamper paint on the snouts as of late. The look alike pulleys are discontinued I think.

You get the real added power and response when you tune the engine properly for the added bolt ons.

You can have a pretty fast truck with the right add ons and tune (high 12s are possible and 13s are pretty easily achieved). but out of box i wouldnt call it fast.

and as far as wear and tear. it all depends on how you drive it. Cruising on the highway, it will run pretty much like a stock truck with the bypass open and no boost. It may actually get better mileage cruising since you get a more efficient air charge. I used to get 24 mpg at 75 mph in the X with over 400 Hp.

if you hammer it all the time, then yeah, it puts more strain on everything, but the occasional spirited driving is not going to hurt the longevity or reliability. If you have the right tune, it should last just as long as an NA truck.

It wont be any more wear and tear than putting 35s on the truck and not regearing and lugging the drivetrain all the time, or hard wheeling.

I wouldnt worry about reliability or longevity

    Good luck

    Justin

    Justin,

    Thanks for the info.
How can I tune it? Toyota will flash it. I would love to get 13.0 or 13.5 in the quarter. What would be needed?

OP, I'd worry first about getting the SC and installed. pulley and ECU/tune is what you do after your warranty is over. you just paid a lot for the extra warranty...don't ruin it so fast IMO. lots of time to research until then to find out exactly what you want

I think unichip makes plug and play connectors for the 09+ trucks

I wouldn't run a unichip but I would buy the plug and play harness if you could get it separate

To whoever left me bad rep for this post: you've obviously never had a forced induction vehicle. :D :D :D

Ps-too scared to leave his name hahah

Pss- to whoever left positive rep, thank you. A little bit of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.

Sounds to me like you've had a non reliable boosted car that coulda been a lemon or you could have been doing things on the cheap, or it previous owner may not have taken proper car of it, but way that goes back to my previous comment fast, cheap, or reliable pick two. Also given all the issues that you've had with your truck one could say its not reliable, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way. reliability does not equal longevity which is what your equating to be reliability. Forced induction does not automatically mean it wont be reliable. Obviously Toyota felt that there was enough of a safety margin left in our motors or they wouldn't have released a supercharger for it. But to me this seems to make a lot of sense about what you post about vehicles that have forced induction.
So basically to sum things up don't post your opinions and spout them like they are hard and fast rules because all vehicles can be reliable or unreliable forced induction or not. And hey what do I know i just took automotives and aircraft maintenance engineering in school as well as working in both industries. :D

    Ok tough guy.

Fact is, it has been proven time and time again that forced induction does ruin long term reliability. Been proven by different manufacturers and different engines. This is especially true with add on turbos and superchargers. Diesels can handle them because diesels are build STRONG.

They do. If you want a plug n play, and have to have it now, spend the extra coin to buy their unit and get that harness. Then use itike an extension harness. Shoot, what i paid for my extension harness from ProEFI, is the same as what you could buy the whole Unichip for. Lol. So not really a bad deal. ;)

Not true. I know several local trucks with the S/C that have been THRASHED with well over 100k with zero issues.
Call APR. They will tell you that the stock internals are good to 500hp.
Most every extended warranty does cover the S/C. I know a guy that works for one of the warranty companies in the group that figures pricing based on failure info. His word is there is just no data that says that an S/C makes a Taco more prone to failure.

If you know different, post facts.

Op: Good luck with the supercharger! I am picking one up for my 2012 next month....confirmed. The dealer wanted $5300 for the part and fit kit, and I said no way. I am picking mine up from ebay for $3850 shipped, including the fit kit. Install at my local dealer for $800.

Just be sure to get the right fit kit! 2012 has a different part number for the fit kit than the 2011's and before. 2012 fit kit part # is PTR29-35120. The supercharger itself is the same, part # PTR29-35090. The old 2011 fit kit is PTR29-35110.

$4900 out the door at the dealership for parts and install is a good price. Also Toyota has rated their engine components to withstand the 304bhp the supercharger will give you, meaning your rig will still be very reliable. Anything further and Toyota will not guarantee it. So if you swap out the pulley for a smaller one, it will void your warranty.

I'll let you know how my supercharger goes. I am a fan of superchargers, and currently have a Jeep SRT8 with a Kenne Bell supercharger, so I am not new to this game. Let me know how your deal goes!! Wes
