Could SOMEone tell me WHY Toyota insists on still making the SINGLE VVT-i (236hp) for the Tacoma, instead of just using the DUAL VVT-i (270hp) from the 4Runner et al????
... Same goes for the rear drums???
... And what's with the fake leather in the 2013's?
... And why the downgrade from 2012's Entune nav/net/audio center?

    Thanks!!!!

SAE hp measurement method changed around 2006-2007, can't remember the exact year, resulting in slight drops.

The earliest hp and torque figures were achieved with premium fuel. Hp and torque figures with current SAE method is 236 hp / 266 lb-ft with 87 octane, and 239 hp / 278 lb-ft with 91 octane.

The Tacoma out-accelerates and out-brakes the Nissan Frontier, so there's really no incentive for Toyota to change anything.

i just can't fathom how a company like Toyota can do NOTHING to improve one of their models over SEVEN years... and call their chrome stick-ons, decals and fake leather trim some kind of improvement... even FORD developed eco-boost!

VERY SERIOUSLY looking... getting DAMNED frustrated... wanted one LAST year, ordered one out of Riverhead, tracked it to the NJ port, got a shed full of accessories waiting. But got jerked around, and cancelled.
Then I figured Toyota MUST be introducing the 4Runner's DUAL VVT-i (270hp) in the Tacoma... finally... for 2013. Rear drums i can live with... rears don't do a lot anyway... FAKE leather, I'll pass.
(Going for the Access Cab (need the long-bed) Off-Road Package anyway... if I do.)

    Silverado 1500 has rear disc.
    2500 and 3500 have drum.

Disc is easier to maintain, but is not "better" on a pickup.

    sorry, Rich.
I figured you'd be pleased, knowing that your 2008 Taco is as up-to-date
as a spankin'-new 2013 rolling off the ramp in San Antonio next Tuesday!
    didn't mean to offend.

yup... the new front grille IS different...
reminiscent of a bull-dog with underbite.
i was speaking of SUBSTANTIVE change... beyond plastic.
for what it's worth, Brad... you got the better looking grille IMO!

Wasn't my choice... My '95 Suburban was a POS and the used '08 was all I could afford.

My choice and unlimited finances, I'd have a '12 Taco 4x4.

But you don't hear me complaining about the technology of my truck.
My only complaint is the lousy bench seat... and that can be dealt with.
Likewise was Toyota not installing cruise and intermittent wipers.
    I did that for $200.

I don't care if my truck has 40hp more or less than another model.
It's just not a big deal. It's not a major impact on fuel economy. It's ZERO impact on day to day driving.

    It's a non-issue.

Now excuse me, I'm going to trot on over to a Ford forum and bitch about how much the Powerstroke sucks and the Duramax is so much better... even though I own a Toyota.

well, thanks for all the cynicism, guys...
was looking for a reason to wait for a Toyota upgrade.
if you guys recommend dumping 21st-century cash... LOTS of it...
    on 2005 technology...
then i guess i AM in the wrong forum.

    be well.

    yes...
    come on...
who's gonna type that "2005" IS in the 21st century?

was looking for a SERIOUS discussion on technology...
    didn't find it.

Go design your own truck and sell it to Toyota.

Heard the same shit when Toyota released the Tundra Doublecab and the 2003 facelift.
People complained about how much more power other 4.7-class engines were making.

Toyota moved to a 5.7 in the new Tundra.
The result? The ugliest truck on the market, and a new engine design loaded with problems including breaking camshafts.
The only thing "wrong" with that 4.7 was the timing belt and the fact that it was an interference engine.
I loved my '03 Tundra... that think could really scoot, and in travels all over the western states I never once found it lacking in power.

    That's not just Toyota.

GM was the first to have temporary paint in the 90s.
