I have a new 2012 Tacoma PreRunner Sport. There is a rather large hill I have to go down on the way to work every morning. I have noticed that if I tap my brakes going down the hill, my truck seems to change into a lower gear and it sounds as if the transmission is going to fall out. Why can't I just coast down the hill and that not happen? Is it some new (annoying) feature, or what? Forgive me if this has already been asked before. If so, I couldn't find it. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Yes, if you tap your brakes while coasting the truck automatically downshifts. Here's a link, scroll down a few and you'll see AI shift control.

I hate it! I wish I had known about it before I purchased the vehicle. I might have gone with a Lexus instead. If I couldn't have towing, I may as well have had comfort! LOL Thanks for the replies, guys.

You get 70k out of a set of brakes though.

I test drove it, but apparently there weren't any hills during my test drive that brought out this feature. Plus, I have had a Tacoma before and it didn't do that, so I wasn't expecting it in this one. Too bad they won't let you take them home for a couple of days before you buy like they used to in the old days.

Lexus doesn't make a truck. The Lexus would have been my choice if I couldn't have found a truck I liked. I like my Tacoma overall, I just hate that one feature.

I am pretty sure the Lexus would also do this, as well as most other newer cars. It's a feature I wish they would have had earlier so I wouldn't have to do it manually to keep from smoking my brakes.

    You'll get used to it.

Yea, it is annoying at first, but you will get used to it. Eventually you will anticipate it, and will start to enjoy/appreciate it.

Lexus does it too. At least mine does. I don't even have to tap the brakes, it knows when I'm going down hill and if I start to gain too much speed it will down shift from 6th to 4th. The only way to make it stop is to give it gas.
